Why are there still adult video stores? (NSFW)

Asked by XOIIO (18328points) July 3rd, 2010

I don’t see the point to them. On the spot I can name 5 free porn sites they were for research that you don;t even need to sign up for, and you can download tons of porn torrents as well. Try a “porn video torrent” search on google and your browser damn near crashes. So, what is the point of having adult video stores nowdays?

maybe for old people, or people who do not know how to use a computer/the internet.

I know the stores in my town are turning into adult toy stores. Can’t download toys!

The adult video/bookstore/viewing booths in our neighborhood shutdown a couple years back… It is now a pet store. :)

As stated above, the adult video stores in my area serve multiple functions. They also sell toys and lubricants, have viewing booths, sell magazines. I think that aspect is a better option for certain people than downloading it all on their (potentially) family computer.

My local adult video/bookstore is a combo video/book/toy store. I’ve never been but they’ve been in business a long time so obviously someone is going there.

Some people have really, really big-screen TVs, but not such big computer monitors, and they want to really be wowwed by the size of that big purple toy.

1) Because all those torrents get on the internet by someone renting/buying the physical DVD and uploading it
2) Because sometimes it’s nice to watch porn without having to worry if you’re putting any malware on your computer.

Some of those stores offer live viewing booths.

Not everyone has a computer and not everyone who does have a computer has privacy to view what they want on it.

Adult video stores traditionally carry items like specialty condoms, lubes not found in the grocery store and sex toys you can buy and take home immediately.

Some people still like to browse actually magazines just as some people like to buy and read books rather than download to kindle type readers.

@Sarcasm True, but I have a projector and can have it as large as I want.

I figured it was about toys too, although I have seen a few stores just for toys.

Most adult video stores my way sell toys and have viewing boths and what not too.

And as mentioned, some people just like buying movies. Its like CDs, why are there still cd stores? I can name 20 torrent sites to dl it all for free yet they still get business.

Well, as hard as it is to believe, not everyone has the Internet, and some people might not have the skills or patience to search for good porn sites. Most of them are bullshit, it’s a lot of work finding reliable ones.
And allow me to play the parrot, but plenty of folks still enjoy buying and renting things. I’m one of them.

Also I don’t believe you that it was for a project. :p

They still exist because their clientele still exist. That’s the way the free market works. If they had no clients they would go out of business and cease to exist. So the real question you’re asking is why does the clientele still exist? And for this I can think of a few reasons.
1. Adult video stores sell much more than adult videos. This has been covered here already so I won’t go into details, but yes, toys, lube, costumes, and all sorts of other things they sell fill a niche.
2. Some people love collecting physical DVDs. Some people collect porn just like one would collect Quentin Tarantino movies. Some people prefer to watch DVDs on their screen, sitting on a comfortable couch, versus watching it on their computer screens. Some couples even watch porn together, and it’s much more spontaneous and rewarding to do so on a couch versus crammed around a monitor.
3. To support the producers of the porn. Porn producers aren’t going to keep making nice pornos if no one buys them and chooses to torrent them instead.
4. There is a drastic difference in quality between what one finds on YouPorn and what a porn production company can put out. There is also a difference in variety and availability. Sometimes this works in the favour of internet porn, such as with the extreme fetishes, but even those guys don’t offer their works for free, you have to pay a subscription fee. It’s just an adult video store without the physical store part.
5. There will always be a subset of the population who are computer illiterate. And even amongst the computer literate, there is only a small fraction of users who possess the skills to set up a BitTorrent program and find torrents. As simple as we think this task is, to some people it is an insurmountable problem.
