My wisdom tooth hurts; how worried should I be?

Asked by Haleth (18947points) July 4th, 2010

Over the last few days one of my wisdom teeth and my jaw have started to be really sore. I didn’t sign up for my company’s health insurance (smart move!) and the next time I can opt in is six months from now, once I’ve been at this job for a year. So for the near future, I don’t have insurance. Also, I’m a restaurant manager, so I can’t just call in sick. Unless I can give at least a few weeks notice, there won’t be anybody to cover for me. During the entire time I’ve worked here, I’ve never taken a sick day. I have a five-day vacation scheduled at the end of july, and I’m thinking about staying in town instead and getting this taken care of.

If you’ve had yours removed, how much did it cost, and what was your recovery time? If your teeth started hurting, how bad was it? I’m trying to decide whether I can afford it, and whether I can hold out til my vacation time in three weeks. I’ve heard that an impacted wisdom tooth can become infected, and that can be really serious. I just want to deal with this in a calm and rational way. Thanks!

Do Not worry at all. It will not do you any good. Call your dentist and make an appointment as soon as possible and you will solve the issue.

I recently had a problem with one of my wisdom teeth. It hurt so much! I went to the dentist, and he told me that it was an infection, prescribed me some antibiotics and painkillers, and I was good to go. I’m now looking into getting my wisdom teeth out, but there is no rush, since the pain has disappeared completely.

So, I guess, my message is this: go see the dentist and at least diagnose the problem before you start to worry about getting those teeth out. For this, you’ll have to pay for an x-ray and his/her time – that’s it!

I don’t recall how much it cost, but I had to go to the oral surgeon and have all 4 of my impacted wisdom teeth removed at once. My pain didn’t come from the wisdom teeth directly but from the wisdom teeth pushing forward into my other teeth and not erupting and coming in properly. I took 3 days off work. After the first couple days, the pain wasn’t bad at all, just a little sore. I would say total recovery was maybe 7 days. If your teeth get abscessed it is serious, but it can be cured with antibiotics and then they will do the extraction after the abscess is healed. Good luck!

I had to have all 4 of my wisdom teeth removed when I was 17. They were all impacted and I was put to sleep with IV sedation for the removal. It cost $2000, so $500 per tooth give or take. I don’t think my parents had dental insurance at the time, but I could be mistaken.

The recovery after the removal wasn’t bad. I had stitches that dissolved and was given Percocet for the pain. Within a week I was back to normal. I would definitely get it done sooner rather than later so that it doesn’t require more in depth treatment.

I just had my wisdom teeth out a couple weeks ago and, like @knitfroggy had all four out at the same time. I had a lot of pain when I got home from the extraction, some pain the next day, and by the third day it only really hurt when I opened my mouth too wide. You could easily work (if all goes well with the extraction!) on the third and definitely fourth day after the surgery. It will still be sore but you’ll be functioning perfectly fine. Two weeks later the stitches have dissolved and you would have no idea anybody cut anything open at all.
Mine cost about the same as @Seaofclouds, and I had the IV sedation.

The one thing I will warn you of is that one week might not be enough for the whole process—meaning I had to have a consultation with the oral surgeon before the actual extraction, and they couldn’t fit me in until another week after that for the actual extraction, and you need a follow-up appointment a week after the extraction appointment. So if your dentist decides you do indeed need to have them out, try to plan it so that you have the consultation in two weeks and the extraction in the beginning of your vacation week so you don’t have to take off work.

Don’t panic, just see the dentist.

Sometimes the problem can be one of the molars next to the wisdom tooth getting an abscess. They cut all my wisdom teeth out on the same day but somehow on the x-rays missed the infected tooth next to the one wisdom tooth. When they pulled the one bottom wisdom tooth out it exposed an opening going through the other tooth, that was WAY more painful than the wisdom teeth extraction itself. Pulling out a tooth is usually cheaper than a root canal, some dentists will give you a break with costs if you are uninsured so I would look around for different dentists.

you can save yourself some money and have it done with local anesthetic only. The cost will depend if it’s impacted or not, whether it’s semi erupted and stuff like that. If you are in your early twenties and this is bothering you, the problem is not going to go away except temporarily if it’‘s intfected, antibiotics will help but it will continue to flare up. It’s about $600—$700 per extraction depending. I wish you well, bad time for this to bother you with no insurance good luck
