Does anyone else have adverse reactions when eating garlic?

Asked by Neizvestnaya (22657points) July 9th, 2010

In the past few years my body’s grown intolerant of garlic. It can be fresh, roasted, dried, etc. and though it tastes so good, it does bad things to my guts.

Last night I ate a glorious dinner that had garlic sauteed into the sauce but I picked out the pieces. I didn’t get the usual upset stomach or run to the potty but I did get a throbbing, radiating from bone pain in my lower back that wouldn’t let up until I ate several ibuprofin. Today the pain is gone, like it was never there. What the hell?

What a shame that garlic messes with your gut so much.

You probably should talk to a doctor or at least a dietitian about this,
to make sure that it does not involve some kind of metabolic disorder.

For me, garlic, onion, and EVOO (Extra Virgin Olive Oil) are the basic food groups!

@Dr_Lawrence- I’d sure hate it to be something medical. Grak.

@vampmoore- I did wake up with my knickers on, inside out, hmmn.

Well, you could just be allergic to it…i know soneone who is, although he’ll die if he eats it.

Allergies can just suddenly happen, so it’s not that strange.

@NaturallyMe & others- I think I might go get some testing just to rule out anything serious. I never imagined I’d start having trouble with a food I’ve eaten all my life.

@Neizvestnaya – it’s weird, but sometimes it just seems to hit you out of nowhere. I suddenly became allergic to shrimps and prawns when i’ve eaten them a few times through out my life with no problems at all. Then one day, FOOEY, and i was throwing them all up again.
