File convertion question, specifically DRM protection?

Asked by JMCSD (243points) July 20th, 2010

Hello everyone,

Years back I used WMP to rip music that I legally purchased to my computer. I, at the time, didn’t have the forethought to see what format they were being ripped to. It turns out they were being ripped to .WMA with DRM (I believe) protection. I’ve done this with literally close to a hundred albums, and now am extremely worried I am not going to be able to use this music in iTunes (or pretty much any other software for that matter). How can I fix this and convert these files to MP3? I’ve done some research and so far have had no luck. I do not want to spend 40 bucks on software to do this as I think its ridiculous to pay to use the music I purchased LEGALLY in the way I want. So…. What can I do?

Thanks,
Joe

ASUS soundcards include the ability to copy DRM protected files. What happens is the soundcard decodes the file in order to play the music and then encodes it MP3. Unfortunately it does this in real time so an hours worth of music will take an hour to turn into MP3’s.

I don’t think files you ripped yourself will include DRM. It’s easy to test.

iTunes will create new files for you.

1) open iTunes
2) Set the file type (MP3, AAC, Apple Lossless, etc) you want iTunes to save
via Preferences -> Import Settings
3) Choose ‘Add Folder to Library’

A dialog will ask something like “Convert WMA files?”

I use this the free version is fantastic, I’ve got the paid for version as it came with some other software I bought (which incidentally turned out to be shite) but Switch I use all the time.

@jaytkay windows media player used to add DRM to CDs you ripped yourself if you allowed it too (or more accurately didn’t tell it not to)

That sucks!

@jaytkay yup. Whats even funnier is the little box that asks you if you wanted it to do that made it sound like a good idea.
