Can you explain to me how to pronounce the name of this village in Wales?

Asked by ANef_is_Enuf (26839points) July 21st, 2010

“Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch”

My sister just came back from a trip to Wales and this was where she was staying. I looked it up, but the pronunciation on Wiki doesn’t really make sense to me, either.

Anyone want to take a stab at it?

The Wikipedia pronunciation can be transilterated as such:

Lahn-vire-pool-gwinn-gil-go-geh-ruh*-khwuhr-uhn-droh-bool-lahn-tis-il-ee-oh-go-go-gokh

*“uh” = the schwa sound, like the “e” in the word “paper”.

The short name is Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, which is pronounced lahn-vire-pool-gwinn-gill.

To be technical, the “ll” is pronounced voicelessly, like the “tl” in Aztec languages. It’s pretty hard to say. I’m sure you could get away with just saying it like a regular “l”.
