Why can't I sleep?

Asked by JeffC (17points) July 24th, 2010

Hey guys.
I just joined here; a friend linked me to this site.

Well, I guess I’ll just jump right in:
I’m 16 and I can’t sleep. It’s been about 35 hours since I last slept, and I can’t put a finger on what might be causing my constant awareness.

I don’t drink too much caffeine. I do spend a lot of the time on the internet. I’m not depressed. I don’t have any diseases in the family related to restlessness. I’m underweight, just barely, but I don’t think that would have anything to do with it.

My first thought was obviously insomnia but I’ve been researching it and I do not believe I fit the criteria at all.

Do any of you guys know anything about what I may be experiencing?

Maybe you’re just not tired? That happens to me a lot, like right now it is past 1:30 am and I am not sleepy, jittery but not sleepy.

Welcome to Fluther, btw!

Of course I’m not tired. I’m asking why I’m not tired.
Keep in mind that I haven’t slept in about 35 hours like I said in my original post.

@JeffC Sorry, I misinterpreted the question.

35 hours is a long time. Do you feel jittery? Have you lost weight recently? If so, you may be experiencing Thyroid Storm. I don’t want to scare you, but It’s a very serious condition and requires immediate medical attention. I had it when I was 15, and had no idea that I even had hyperthyroidism prior to that.

I have not been especially jittery. Perhaps a bit in my legs and hands.
I will check in the morning if I have lost weight. If I have, then it’ll be a problem. I weigh just over 100 pounds.

How tall are you? Just over 100 lbs sounds like more than a little underweight for a 16 year old male. Here’s a test for you. Hold your arms straight out in front of you, elbows locked straight. Splay your fingers straight out. Are your hands shaking at all?

JeffC's avatar

I’m 5’6”.
My arms do not shake.

That happened to me all the time in the summers when I was 16 and 17. Also, during the school year, but not as dramatically.

If nothing stressful is happening, then you probably have either plans going on in your brain, or creative stuff. If you have energy, do things like clean up, or research extra ways to make money, or work out your body. Here’s a free routine from a century ago that works great

It’s natural to have this extra energy and/or sleeplessness. So use it.

Ok, if it continues, please see a doctor to rule out anything serious. Hope you get some sleep soon!

when you are tired, dont get back on the computer…....
i know your brain keeps on going, but stimulate it with a book, not the fast web.

might be the heat. no caffeine after 3 or 4. more water. try exercise, biking, swimming,boarding…....and see if that wears you out.

Then tell your parents and see a doc by Monday or Tuesday.

close your eyes, you are getting very sleepy…...........

I agree it can be overactive thyroid or bipolar. Are you feeling hypersexual? Feel compelled to do things that you know logically are against better judgement but don’t care or can’t help yourself. Is your heart pounding or racing at times? Do you fell dizzy or lightheaded? 36 hours is a very long time to be awake with no sleep. Are you sure you haven’t nodded of for a few hours possibly during that time? Are you abusing any drugs? Or, taking any medication at all?
