My laptop is pretty jammed with cat hair. Best safe way to clean it out?

Asked by poofandmook (17320points) July 28th, 2010

I’ve got about a year’s worth of Maine Coon hair shoved up in there, and the last time I had to have a Dell tech come out and work on it, the fool didn’t have anything to clean it out with. I absolutely, in no way, have the money to replace it if I destroy it. So what’s a relatively dummy-proof way to get the cat hair out? I think it would probably be too big of a job for those little keyboard vacuums, and they usually stink anyway.

You could try using compressed air. After you clean it, you should limit your cat’s use on your computer.

@Afos22: I can’t help it. I get home and she’s doing sudoku with her afternoon scotch.

Take a dull butterknife, and carefully pop up the buttons on the keyboard one by one. Then you can use the previously mentioned compressed air, or hoover. Or both. And when you are done with it, and the hoover is still there, vacuum out the ventillation holes too on the backside and the bottom of the laptop, because probably your cooler is covered with hair too but you can’t see it. After then you will have a much quieter and literally cooler laptop. Good luck

@Otto_King: I thought about that, but I’m concerned about not being able to get the keys back on. With my old old laptop, I could pop them back in. But when I tried to fix one of my sister’s keys, I couldn’t get it to click back on.

where is the cat hair stuck? between/under the keyboard keys? in the fan? what kind of laptop is it? – different laptops have different ways of removing and replacing the keys, you can search for videos on youtube for that.

perhaps you can put the laptop in a safe place when you’re not using it so that the cat does not have access, either by closing the door or putting it in a box or drawer or something like that.

also consider treating your cat for moulting:

@ninahenry: Truthfully, I don’t know. When the Dell tech told me about it, he had it closed up and put back together instead of showing me. Stupid.

If you can’t access the hair or don’t know where it is, and don’t know what kind of laptop you have to look for a video about the keyboard, there’s not much you can do unfortunately.
