Is Sen. Kerry a tax cheat?

Asked by ItsAHabit (2302points) July 29th, 2010

Adapted from the BostonHerald.com:

The $7 million sloop, Isabel, is kept in Rhode Island, a location that enabled the Senator from Massachusetts, at least temporarily, to avoid a $507,000 tax bill.

Temporarily only because the Boston Herald broke the story. Now Kerry has agreed to pay up, in his words, whether the taxes are “owed or not.”

What does this say about Senator Kerry?

No he is not a tax cheat, he is smart enough to try and avoid paying taxes legally. Nothing he did was illegal. This time someone called him out on it. I’m sure he and his wife have tax lawyers saving them on every loophole imaginable. He just wants us to pay more taxes.

@ItsAHabit Parking your boat in Rhode Island (where it was purchased) is bad?

Is that worse than advocating suicide as a smart way to avoid estate taxes. ?

@jaytkay It’s not bad at all. One of the platforms he ran for President on was that we should stop outsourcing jobs. I for one, find it ironic that he chose to buy a boat from New Zealand. I mean, there can’t be any good ship builders looking for work right here in the good ole’ US of A.

Not anymore….apparently even Senators will do the right thing when their hand is caught in the cookie jar
“John Kerry promises ‘prompt’ tax payment for yacht”

Atta boy! Pay up John!

Kerry again proves to be an idiot. Who starts out on the right side of an issue and moves to the wrong side simply to be popular with people who do not understand how to legallly play the tax code?

From the Boston Herald:

Sen. John Kerry, who has repeatedly voted to raise taxes while in Congress, dodged a whopping six-figure state tax bill on his new multimillion-dollar yacht by mooring her in Newport, R.I.

Isabel – Kerry’s luxe, 76-foot New Zealand-built Friendship sloop with an Edwardian-style, glossy varnished teak interior, two VIP main cabins and a pilothouse fitted with a wet bar and cold wine storage – was designed by Rhode Island boat designer Ted Fontaine.

But instead of berthing the vessel in Nantucket, where the senator summers with the missus, Teresa Heinz, Isabel’s hailing port is listed as “Newport” on her stern.

Could the reason be that the Ocean State repealed its Boat Sales and Use Tax back in 1993, making the tiny state to the south a haven – like the Cayman Islands, Bermuda and Nassau – for tax-skirting luxury yacht owners?

Cash-strapped Massachusetts still collects a 6.25 percent sales tax and an annual excise tax on yachts. Sources say Isabel sold for something in the neighborhood of $7 million, meaning Kerry saved approximately $437,500 in sales tax and an annual excise tax of about $70,000.

John Kerry said this in February of 2009:

If you put a tax cut into the hands of a business or family, there’s no guarantee that they’re going to invest that or invest it in America.

Wish I hadn’t voted for him!

john effin kerry… the biggest windbag in public service… he is a liberal. Liberals want you to pay taxes, but they feel they themselves shouldn’t pay taxes. Remember the clintons deducting 35 bucks for every pair of undies they donated to the salvation army? Now they have at least two tax trust funds to shelter their income. But they want the rest of us to dig deep into our pockets and pay more taxes.

@ItsAHabit did you fall asleep?

@Tomfafa Stop watching fox news. Kerry is an idiot for this, but I’d bet big money you could find many more senators, dems and republicans, doing similar legal-yet-devious-acts to save money on taxes. And furthermore, you don’t have any idea what you’re talking about with taxes. Taxes on the middle class are actually the LOWEST THEY’VE BEEN IN FIFTY YEARS. And taxes on the riches people in our country are the lowest they’ve EVER been.

@ItsAHabit Can you list acceptable and non acceptable news outlets for me… how about playstation and

and x-box… sorry… this is what our president said we should avoid for news. At least with bush we got mediacrity… with this guy barak we got okey doked

@Tomfafa I’ll assume you were referring to me, I have the same picture as itsahabit (my apologies, lol).

I would suggest anything AP, or CNN. Fox and MSNBC have slants to the right and left respectively. The AP actually JUST reports news, almost always avoiding opinion injection. While CNN avoids it a lot, but balances out the voices of the right and the left in their own staff fairly well.

Tomfafa Before the advent of cable news there was an oligarchy of three ABC,NBC and CBS plus public TV) that were all left-leaning and controlled the news and commentary. Walter Cronkite (“the most trusted man in America”) even said that “the news is what I say is the news.”

A lot of folks don’t like the democratization of TV news and opinion that now exists, but I think it’s healthy for a democracy. They may say they agree, then follow it with the big BUT….. Which reveals that they really don’t like the diversity of news and opinion. They remind me of the folks who claim to support free speech but quickly follow with the big BUT….
