What is your opinion about the new study that says Calcium Supplement may promote Heart attacks?

Asked by philosopher (9065points) July 30th, 2010

I admit I am unsure.
Some people say we can not absorb these supplements well anyway.
I found some links. Below is one.

I am looking for information. Not a political debate.

I hope this isn’t true. As I’m dairy-intolerant I rely on calcium supplements.

It’s annoying, because it’s contrary to other studies saying that calcium supplements can reduce serum cholesterol and in turn heart attacks and stroke:

Once again we find that everything that’s good for you is bad for you and the ultimate cause of death is life itself.

@GeorgeGee: The link you posted was from “winter, 1994.”

The same debate is going on now over recommended daily dosage of D3. An article in the July 1, 2010 issue of The American Journal of Epidemiology concludes that “with levels over 40 ng/Ml people were twice as likely to be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.”

Their new recommendations: Take 700 -1000 IU D3 daily. My dermatologist is taking 5000IU daily.

After five years, I just stopped taking a bisphosphenate (Actonel) for osteoporosis prevention due to new evidence, that may be superseded by newer new evidence.

Yes, I’m aware the link was from 1994, and I have been taking calcium supplements since about then. This of course makes it all the more disconcerting to hear that their best advice THEN might be killing me NOW. I was also on Fosamax but stopped that after it apparently caused debilitating joint pain.

I heard a report on CBS evening new yesterday saying that the latest study says calcium supplements cause heart attacks. Most drugs and some supplements have side effects.
Studies are also subjective depending upon who does them.
I am a bit confused as to what to do now.
LOL I took one calcium supplement today not two.

Like many things, it’s all a balancing act. How important is the calcium to your daily life? Is it worth the risk? Only you and your doctor can decide that. I’m struggling right now with a similar pro/con medication issue and it really does suck.
