If you were a Health Inspector, would you give this restaurant another chance?

Asked by SassyPink (284points) August 4th, 2010

You are an health inspector at a small restaurant and you happen to be enjoying one of the best meals served to you when suddenly, one of the busboys started crying in tears towards you and the manager that his/her chewed gum piece accidently fell in the food. You were obviously disgusted to hear the incident and stormed out of the restaurant. What would you do: give the restaurant a second chance and fire the busboy? Give the restaurant and the busboy a second chance? Or something else?

The busboy confessed his mistake. He deserves a second chance. The manager could apologize to each customer personally and offer to comp the meal. If I were one of the them I would then come back for a second try—but only if the meal was a good one.

Gum? lol just gum? if the meal was good I wouldn’t even care. bandaid is a different story. I’ve worked fast food and fine dining and both are equally unsanitary if you piss off the waiter/crew.

Exactly why I avoid restaurants. That was only one mistake that was exposed. Imagine what else goes on behind the scenes.

I wouldn’t punish the busboy.

I’d watch to see what he did with the food…and, if he handled it properly, I’d get on with my meal. No need to get dramatic over something like that.

I don’t get it, why didn’t the busboy just dump that dish and order up a new one. Worst thing I think could have happened is that the boss would deduct the cost of the replacement meal from his earnings.

But why was a bus boy delivering food, I don’t get the whole scenario???

The busboy receives a second chance. at least it was not a pubic hair, like the one i found in a strawberry shortcake in a restaurant in Florida.

it was a harmless mistake. Give them both a second chance. Tell them no eating while cooking.

@SassyPink Sorry…I’m lost.
* Whose gum is it…the manager’s or the busboy’s?
* A health inspector has no right to fire an employee in a restaurant that they do not have ownership in, and even if they did, wouldn’t that be some type of violation for them to inspect their own restaurant?
* A health inspector would want to know what happened to the food/dish that the gum fell into. And as @rooeytoo said, why wouldn’t the dish be dumped out, and why would a busboy be in the role of serving?

The job of a health inspector is to rate their experience and what they see on a very large scale, albeit for the short time-frame they are there. If a restaurant gets low marks, then they have a certain time to bring things back up to standards. If the restaurant fails, they can be shut down.

I’d sue them for $100 million in damages.

Remember: ask not what this country can do for you—ask who you can sue.

@Pied_Pfeffer and @everyone else

You made some good points and I will try to clear this scenario up as best as possible. Just remember that this scenario is only fictional and you’re trying to imagine yourself in it….

1. In this scenario, I never did said it was the busboy who serve the food, but he’s somewhat responsible for the incident.

-Here’s the busboy’s situation:
The sever is getting ready to serve the food to the inspector. The server has set a plate of food on the counter for a brief moment in order to get the drink. The busboy happens to be cleaning the counter while chewing his gum and the gum accidently fell in the food right before the server return with the drink. The busboy tried to warn the server but the server didn’t hear him and it was a little too late.

2. It was the manager who plans to fired the busboy.The manager fears that he doesn’t want the busboy to be the reason for his restaurant to get shut down from a little incident. (That is, if the restaurant gets shut down)

Now I’m gonna revised these last few sentences the best I can…...
“What would you do (as an health inspector): give the restaurant a second chance and allow the manager to fire the busboy? Give the restaurant and allow the manager to give the busboy a second chance? Or something different than what I listed?”

Did I answer your questions so far? If not , let me know. It’s too bad that I cannot edit some changes to this topic.

@SassyPink Thank you for the clarification and the correction on an assumption made on my part.

The restaurant inspector has no right to interfere with how the restaurant manager handles the situation, and it isn’t part of their job.

It all comes down to many different factors in the scoring process of an inspection. I have inspected hundreds of hotels, and the scoring is based upon overall service, cleanliness, product and meeting standards. In the big scheme of things, if the gum situation is explained to the inspector, most will appreciate the humor of the situation. We are, after all, human ourselves.

I would do nothing. There is no systemic problem with the restaurant.

I would feel sorry for the busboy.I would give the busboy another chance.
