Khyal pronunciation from WordReference.com In Khayal the letter kh sounds like the strong German ch or Spanish j . I think it’s very close to pinyin h of hen hao, but maybe a bit stronger, the tongue clearly touching the palate.
Khyal (or Khayal: Hindi: ख़्याल, Urdu: خیال) is the modern genre of classical singing in North India; its name comes from an Arabic word meaning “imagination”. It appeared more recently than dhrupad. Like all Indian classical music, khyal is modal, with a single melodic line and no harmonic parts. The modes are called raga, and each raga is a complicated framework of melodic rules. According to the Oxford Hindi-English Dictionary, it’s spelled either ख़याल or ख़्याल and is pronounced /xjal/ or /xijal/. I think that many Hindi speakers would pronounce it /kjal/ or /kijal/.
