Are Team Fortress 2 dedicated servers supposed to automatically show up on the server list?

Asked by haegenschlatt (122points) August 17th, 2010

I’m trying to set up a TF2 dedicated server on a spare Linux computer. I’ve apparently set up config files correctly, all the ports are forwarded, and the server starts correctly.

Yet when I go into Team Fortress 2 I don’t see my server listed.

Is it not supposed to appear? Maybe I’m doing something wrong? What should I check?

You should be able to see it and join it from any computer. If you install the server application on a Windows computer, you can even join the server from the same computer! This was my experience with the HL2 Deathmatch server – I’m not sure if it applies to the TF2 dedicated server.

The server works fine when I type in the address in “Favorites” but I can’t see it in the public server list. How do I get it on that list?

I had the same problems with a cs:s server and steam doesn’t give you any help whatsoever.
