Do you work better when you have company?

Asked by harple (10448points) August 31st, 2010

I should be packing boxes right now, but instead I can’t even drag myself off my sorry ass to make myself the cup of tea I’m gagging for… If someone were here with me, I would be busy getting on and chatting to them, and generally achieving so much more…

Earlier this year I would disappear off to a coffee shop to write my book, and achieve so much when surrounded by people and noise than sitting at home alone…

Are you the same? Or do you crave solitude to be able to get things done?

When the person is competent enough, yes. I usually like working alone, although it depends on the size of the job.

A lot depends on mood…but I feel like productivity is best served by interaction. Aside from someone there to make sure that you have external accountability to think about, bouncing ideas makes things fun and more interesting for me…and can also prevent you from going down the wrong path. I had an officemate at work when I started whereas more senior people had their own offices. I loved it.

Of course, there are times when you HAVE to be alone. Again, I’m going for what I think is generally the best.

I love company. So I can delegate ALL the work to other people.

I work best when left to my own devices or if I have a minion that has to listen to me. A little help is always nice, but it’s easier just to do things myself. Much less stressful than making sure someone else is doing what they’re supposed while you’re trying to do what you’re supposed to.

I hate doing things alone! Mostly when I am washing dishes or just doing anything, I always have to have some music on. Or ask my mom if she want’s to sit in the work am working at and we could gossip, then everything goes well.

@blackberry, @OptimalMoose In the examples given, it’s just having the company that makes me crack on with what I need to get done – I agree, it is stressful having to manage someone elses time!

@Thesexier I’m with you there – nice that you have such a good relationship with your mum :-)

@iamthemob bouncing ideas is great!

I am exactly like you. Sometimes I wish I could just invite someone over to watch me work.

@iamthemob Hmm, I never thought about it like that.

@ChazMaz ha ha, you coming back to watch now???...

@harple I’m the same as you – so much more productive when working with others. I once had a job with an office to myself and I hated it.

If it’s housework then I like to be alone. At my job then I like a bustle of people around me. When writing though, I do best when alone.

I also Like to work alone. More things get done and not a lot of distractions.

If they are helping, yes. If they are watching, no.
