Virus on my Mac?

Asked by jackm (6212points) September 6th, 2010

I have a mac book pro running 10.5

Recently it has slowed down, and randomly plays a “download complete”-type sound about every hour.

My question is this: How do I monitor what programs are outputting sound to the speakers so I can catch the culprit?

First thing I would do is install Little Snitch and keep note of anything odd.

Utilities/Activity Monitor will show you what processes are running at any given time. Some you will recognize, while others have obscure names. Some will have been launched by you, and some will have been launched by the System (root).

The free iStat Menus is a great way to see how much of your CPU power and RAM are being used, and what’s using them. If you see a spike in activity and your computer slows down, you might be able to catch the culprit.
