Help! What did I do? I've taken Iodine and it burns...

Asked by t (54points) September 7th, 2010

So, I ordered Lugol’s iodine a few weeks ago and just received it in the mail. I wanted to use it right away, but I wasn’t sure how…I thought applying 3 drops under my tongue would suffice. I wasn’t able to come up with much of anything after doing an online search of other people administering it this way, but as I was impatient I just assumed it would be okay because I thought I had heard of it before.

It burns like satan. What have I done? Should I be afraid?

Is your skin in your mouth ripping? If not then drink milk or eat bread with sour cream. Don’t try drinking water, that just makes it worse. I drank, yes drank a hot sauce called hot sauce from hell or something like that. It sucks and i had no milk, you might just have to tough it out for a little while.

I don’t think it is ripping. There was discoloration under my tongue after I took the 3 drops and a lot of burning, but now the burning has subsided and the discoloration is gone; so I suppose it has all absorbed. Running the tip of my tongue over the area feels similar to tonguing a wound in the mouth, but there is no ripping. I tried drinking water immediately after and it did hurt (seemed to make it worse). I don’t have milk, so I tried almond milk to no avail. Anyway…it doesn’t really burn anymore, just kind of feels rough and sore.

If you have no milk, corn starch or flour in water solution will help.

This might sound ridiculous…actually, it will sound ridiculous…but how would one get goiter? I might be a bit of a hypochondriac, so feel free to tell me I’m crazy, but really – is goiter a possible outcome of sudden intake of too much iodine? Or is it a long-term thing? Oh god I fear goiter.

What is goiter?

Can you eat shellfish? It could be an allergic reaction.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

Why are you putting it under your tongue? Generally speaking, this is a topical substance – at least in the way I use it.

daytonamisticrip – Google image search goiter. It horrifies me.

loser – I don’t eat seafood, and I’m not aware of any allergies. I hope I’m not allergic!

How do I quote someone?

Simone_De_Beauvoir – I thought I’d heard of dropping it under the tongue. I don’t even know. I should have just diluted it in water as suggested on a forum. I’m aware that people do apply it to the skin, but I guess I thought it might have a more potent effect when dropped straight into my mouth.

I didn’t eat shellfish either. I only found out I was allergic to iodine when they gave me an IV that had some in it. I turned red all over and my throat swelled up and I went into anaphyactic shock. I had to be rushed to the ER.

Deleted by me. I had some incorrect information in my post.

@t Did you think you were iodine-deficient?

t's avatar

Oh wow…I don’t know, loser. I’m feeling much better now, just a little sore. I was very concerned at the time I created this topic. Your reaction was obviously far more severe, but I suppose an allergy is not out of the question.

tedibear – ah, thank-you!

Simone – yes.

t's avatar

Simone, could you tell me about how you apply your iodine?

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@t I think this will be helpful for you – you should eat foods that will provide you with iodine naturally and foods that will encourage iodine uptake. I use mine as a disinfectant, to treat wounds and scrapes.

t's avatar

Yes, I just did a search and found that. I wonder if it’s okay to do that today even though I only recently took the iodine?

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@t To do what today? Eat seaweed or treat a wound?

t's avatar

Do the self-test. I based my assumption on the lack of iodine in my diet and my symptoms of iodine deficiency. I never performed a skin-test.

WestRiverrat's avatar

@t you may want to get your iodine level checked by your Dr. before you take any more. There is a very fine line between enough and too much. And trust me, you do not want iodine poisoning.

t's avatar

I’m always going off half-cocked. Thanks for your suggestion westriverrat. That is sound advice.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@t I don’t need to do a self-test – I eat many of the foods listed in the link daily – I have no reason to worry.

t's avatar

I meant: I wonder if it’s safe for me to self-test for iodine deficiency when I’ve recently taken 12mg of it. But I’ll just wait and do it tomorrow, or the day after.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@t Please drink lots of water and wait a bit, yes.

Why aren’t you just using iodized salt? That’s the way most people get their iodine. It doesn’t take much.

the iodine you take is a potassium forms of iodine you should try a Nascent Detoxified Iodine.
I use the nascent iodine due to the fact that it is much less toxic if the iodine burns under your tongue then just put the drops in a glass of water and take it that way.
you do not get enough iodine from foods anymore due to the other toxic halides, fluoride, and bromide which will block the glands from absorbing iodine or at least hinder the iodine
