Why is it only called "cotton mouth" when you're high?

Why do we call it “cotton mouth” when you’re high, but the rest of the time refer to it as “dry mouth”?

I’ve heard people refer to it as cotton mouth when they weren’t high. I say dry mouth when it’s just a little dry and easily fixed with a drink and cotton mouth when it’s really dry and a drink really doesn’t help it.

Because your mouth gets so dry it is like you had a wad of cotton in there drying it out.

I get cotton mouth when I snore. I only snore after I have had to many drinks. I have heard used other times. It is popular with potheads though as well as having the munchies. I have had to the munchies even when I was not high. I am a ex smoker.

I’ve heard it called cotton mouth without being associated with drugs.

Yup, I’ve heard it not used as a drug term. There are several names for overly dry mouth; Xerostomia, cotton mouth and dry mouth are just a few.

It’s also a term used to nick name Agkistrodon piscivorus. That’s not really relevant but it’s still good information.

It’s because you use cotton to staunch the blood after you withdraw the needle. ~

I always say cottonmouth when my mouth is dry, even if its not associated with getting high.

Well then I stand corrected. I must be hanging out with a weird group, then.

@papayalily I must have too. LOL Oh! Well.

I’ve heard people say that before. I think it’s when your mouth feels really dry and sticky.
