How is it they get away with claiming, "In God We Trust" on all our money, and yet there is supposed to be separation of church and state?

Asked by Ben_Dover (4213points) September 10th, 2010

Courts have been disallowing nativity scenes on/at State and Federal buildings…We are supposedly phasing out the “One Nation Under God” section in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Why is In god We Trust still allowed on our money.

Could it be they are really saying that money is their God, so when they say In God We Trust, they are really saying In Money We Trust?

They in this case being the people who decided what to put on our dollars.

US Constitution guarantees freedom of religion, not freedom from religion.

And they are not promoting one religion over another.

Your answer is disingenuous at best.

@Ben_Dover It might benefit you to browse American History 101. In the meantime, our constitution guarantees that the state will not establish a religion, notwithstanding the fact that that clause has been stretched way beyond its meaning by your fellow travelers at the ACLU.

I’m sure that if you asked a politican, the answer would be that “God” is a generic term, so that no specific religion is being endorsed. However, that answer doesn’t take non-theists into consideration. I do know that the phrase was coined (bad pun fully intended) in the 1950’s as a response to the Cold War paranoia over communism.

@Ben_Dover Pardon…..yet there is supposed to be separation of church and state?
Separation of church and state is not mentioned in the constitution, so your assumption that there is supposed to be such is in error. The constitution guarantees that the state cannot establish a religion, although this guarantee has been stretched way out of proportion to the extent that “separation of church and state” is what the public, you included, think we are entitled to.
