What extentions is Windows Movie Maker compatible with?

I have Windows Vista and I am trying to make a movie. I have Quick Time Player, Windows Media Player, and I-Tunes. When I try to import a video into Windows Movie Maker, it dosent show up on the browse list. So what extensions can I use?

What is the source of the video and what is the current extension? If it is avi you will need to convert it first.
