Ladies- what causes gray hair?

Asked by rodydoe89 (356points) September 23rd, 2010

I am 21 years old, and I woke up this morning and looked in the mirror only to see a gray hair popping out of my head!! I immediately plucked it, of course. But is this something genetic, does stress cause it, or what? Is there a way to prevent it?

Mostly genetic. Early grey runs in families, usually starts in your 20’s. Did anyone else go grey young in your family that you know of?

My mother started growing gray in her 20s, just as her own mother did. Both of them colored it the rest of their lives. Personally, I LOVE salt & pepper or gray hair on a woman.

It’s genetics. I have one parent who has hardly any grey and he’s 69 and mother started to go grey in her mid to late 20s. She was salt and pepper by the time she was 35 and nearly completely grey by 40. I’m 37 and I have three grey hairs so I don’t know who I’m taking after yet. I hope my dad but then I could go grey really fast.

You may have that one and not another for ages.

Men ..lol joking.
@JLeslie is right ..mostly genetic. I got my first white hair when I was 16 ..lol.

@tranquilsea your dad. If you took after your mom you would be grey by now. Either you are early grey or you are not pretty much.

@YoBob LOL…in my case, maybe I can blame my parents…..:)

Well, I guess I will be dying my hair for the rest of my life, because my mother has dyed her hair for as long as I can remember. And we look exactly alike. I take after her for pretty much everything… geez.

@rodydoe89 – yes, unfortunately, there is nothing else we can do…..:(

@JLeslie I’m thinking I may take after my dad but I don’t want to be disappointed if I suddenly go grey lol. There aren’t many traits I would want from my dad but that one I’d take. His mom had brown hair until the day she died.

My oldest sister definitely took after my mom as she is white now and she’s 43. Thankfully, for her, the white looks like blond. It pisses her off royally when people call her a blond because she was a redhead.

@tranquilsea and did your sister start in her 20’s?

tranquilsea's avatar

@JLeslie a little bit in her late 20s but that was really masked due to her red hair. My mother had brown hair and it showed every grey hair. As my sister went through her 30s her hair just appeared lighter and lighter.

I started going gray when I was about 19. It hasn’t been very prominent, I just have a little patch on my temple now and I am 28. My grandmother was completely gray by the time she was 25, so genetics definitely factor in.

When you go gray on top. Do you go gray below?

The body makes its own peroxide which bleaches the color from your hair.

while the process happens normally with age, it can be accelerated by stress, genetics, and genetic abnormalities such as progeria.
