Has anyone here dealt with compartment syndrome?

Asked by tranquilsea (17775points) September 24th, 2010

I’m in the process of being diagnosed with compartment syndrome. From what I’ve read the tests for it are mighty uncomfortable to say the least.

Is there anything that can be done to minimize the effects of it (besides avoiding the activities that bring it on)? I have tried wrapping my ankles/shins with slightly tight tape: that didn’t help. I bought a shin wrap that provides counter pressure to the muscles: it didn’t help.

I’m back in to the sports medicine doctor in October. That has been frustrating. I was first referred back in November of 2009. It took 7 months to get in to see him. He sent me test to see if I had stress fractures which I don’t and the next time I could get in to see him for a follow up was in another 4 months. Next up is the testing for compartment syndrome.

I was on a good running schedule when this problem popped up (again). I stopped when it got really bad. But I need to run for stress relief. Biking doesn’t help the same way running does for some strange reason. I’ve recently started running again but I’m in pain 5 minutes in and I have to break up the runs with lots of standing still.

So, again: is there anything, anything I can do to provide relief?

I had this thing that looked like a dough roller/whatever the hell it’s called that helped relax the muscles when rolled up and down the general area of the compartment syndrome.
