What must I do with this installation problem?

Asked by Anatelostaxus (1428points) September 28th, 2010

How can I resolve this Problem with Ubuntu software centre downloads?
(The Message I received is the following):

Previous installation hasn’t been completed
“The installation could have failed because of an error in the corresponding software package or it was cancelled in an unfriendly way. You have to repair this before you can install or remove any further software.”

Please help a new enthused Ubuntu user..

I use Gentoo, so I don’t know a lot about Ubuntu. I think you’d have better luck with the Ubuntu forums. Although someone might come along later on and be able to answer this.

Although, I guess the first thing I would do is check the list of installed software and see if whatever you installed last shows up and then uninstall it.

Did you run the install as a superuser? (sudo apt-get install package_name) Maybe that’s a dumb question, but it never hurts to ask.

Here is a thread in a Ubunti forum about this issue.

In short, try this;
sudo rm /var/lib/dpkg/updates/*
sudo dpkg—configure -a

And try to install again after than does it’s thing.

Run System->Administration->Synaptic Package Manager, in the bottom left-hand corner click Custom Filters, then in the left pane you can see a filter named Broken. Click that to view which packages are broken, right click those packages and select Mark for Reinstallation. Then click Apply on top.
