Can I use coconut oil on color treated hair?

Asked by Likeradar (19583points) October 2nd, 2010

I have very dry hair, and I have read about the benefits of using coconut oil as a conditioning treatment. My hair is color-treated, and I can’t find any information about the effects of the oil on color treated hair. I asked my colorist today, and she doesn’t know. Does anyone know if it will damage my color?

As long as it’s virgin coconut oil, you have nothing to worry about. As a matter of fact, it will most likely help preserve the color by protecting it from harsh water and the sun. Coconut oil is truly one of nature’s “miracles”. It can be used for so many things.

Make sure it’s virgin coconut oil, though. If it doesn’t smell or taste like coconut, that means it’s been bleached and processed, and not nearly as beneficial.

Awesome, thanks @DrasticDreamer. Can I assume that a jar from a store like Vitamin Cottage that claims it’s virgin oil really is?

What else do you suggest I use it for?

Most likely, yeah. Generally on the sides of the jars it will say whether or not it’s been bleached and/or processed. Anything that smells and tastes like coconuts is most likely organic/virgin.

You can use it for cooking – it’s much healthier than other kinds of oils. It’s also a fantastic moisturizer for really dry skin. And even ingesting a spoonful a day helps lower cholesterol. It’s also proven beneficial for women who get yeast infections, who would rather not rely on medication, because it’s extremely antibacterial. There are really so many things.

And a great sun-screen too! I read an article somewhere, that related the claims of the ‘body building’ community of your Muscle Beach, of some decades ago, that they found that coconut oil, when used topically, was “the best” thing for preventing sunburn. And for promoting a great tan.

I used it as an over night hair masque and my hair has never been softer! I also put a bit in before blowdrying and it came out beautifully. I’m also using it as an eye makeup remover and skin lotion… it’s only been a few days but I feel like I found a miracle.

@Likeradar Good, I’m glad. :D I felt the same way when I first started using it.

@DrasticDreamer What else do you use it for, beauty wise?
