How do officers get promoted?

When a sergeant becomes a lieutenant or a major becomes a colonel, who makes the decision and what generally merits the promotion? On TV and in movies, it seems like one’s superior can just haphazardly hand out new captain’s shields or extra chevrons on a whim with no departmental oversight. Does anyone out here know what really happens?

in movies, that’s wartime. And yes, during wartime, you can get promoted like that. Take Band of Brothers for example, the First Sergeant got promoted to Leiutenant in the final chapters. But, ordinarily, you’re CO will have to put in a recomendation, you go before the Board of Reviews, and depending on your military history and your interview, you may or may not get promoted.

My husband is a detective, and he just took a sergeaut’s test. If he scores well, and positions are available, he will become a sergeant.
He became a detective because he was extremely good at his job, and they promoted him before the probation period.

Actually, this is all helpful. I meant all law enforcement and military (police is in the tags section). Everybody wins.

I am an eighteen year veteran firefighter my rank is Captian. We like police officers are civil service employees and must take exams for promotion. There are slight differences among departments but on my department we take exams and the person with the most time on who passes the test gets the promotion.

all depends on the type of serivice. In the air force you get e-1 to e-4 by time. After that you have to test for rank. On your job and air force history. Its hard.

Thet get promoted by there results, the more convictions they make stick the better they get promoted. Thats why police dont care if your innocent or guilty they just want a conviction. Thats why theres so many corrupt police who falsify evidence because it helps them get promoted.
