Anyone have any success with VNC and remote logins?

I need some resources for the following:

My next project is to VNC into my home computer from work. Additionally, I want to be able to VNC into an XP computer (from my linux macine), which is owned by a friend of mine, who I’ve been helping with ram upgrades and virus protection. This would help me by making his system accessible from my home!

Is static IP essential? what do I do with the number I get form IP sites like www.ipchicken.com ? How is it different form my IP address on my computers? Is VNC even the best option? Has anyone else had success with this?

I can remote login to my internal network, but this seems to be a bit more difficult.

I used RealVNC on my windows computers. It’s pretty easy to setup and it’s fairly secure.

Static IP is not essential, but you have to keep checking to see if your ip changed overnight etc. But if use something like, No-Ip.org you can use their application in conjuncton with their services, which gives you a domain like: home.myvnc.com or test.no-ip.org that points to your home server. And the application will auto update where the no-ip domain will link to to your static ip.

Thanks it makes total sense, but I heard you need to port forward using SSH to be secure?

I think ubuntu has the problem solved (man I love this distro). it’s bundled software seems to share the same protocol as windows remote login. but I intend to use VNC, too.

I haven’t heard the port forwarding through ssh thing before.
