Subtle yet distinctive engagement ring?

Asked by sarahsugs (886 points) | asked June 10th, 2007 | 4 responses | “Great Question” (1 points) | Flag as…
All the engagement rings I've looked at look more or less the same and are pretty conventional. Plus, most are way too flashy and big. Any suggestions of designers/websites I could look at to find something subtle, yet still unusual?

Look for local galleries of independent artists/metalsmiths/jewelers. Contact SNAG (Society of North American Goldsmiths) for jewelers in your area. www.snagmetalsmith.org/

Buy a vintage ring. Older jewelry is more varied, and often better made than the latest work. Most brides don't want "someone else's" ring, so you also get a lot for your money. This works particularly well if, like my wife, you have smaller hands, since apparently women had smaller ring sizes in past generations.

Most jewelers will do some custom work. You can also look at a few designers that might have some of the “understated, yet artisitc and unusual” look you seem to be going for. Diamond Engagement Rings are the standard, but thre are lots of different styles, even if you don’t have the budget or creativity for a custom piece. Some examples of designers that I think do a nice job of making somehting unique are:
Ritani Diamond Engagement Rings
Roberto Coin Cento Diamond Engagement Rings
Scott Kay Diamond Engagement Rings

The engagement ring which you have in your mind can be either customized by a designer or you yourself build and customize engagement ring as per your requirements. I can suggest a website on which can built your own engagement ring:
