I need to shrink a PDF’s file size in OS X. Is there a free application to do this?

Preview will do it to a certain extent. If you go to: save as>quartz filter> Reduce file size.

compress and/or gzip will get the job done without installing anything new… if you’re cool with working with the command line in the Terminal, that is.

If you want a free (as in beer) download, you could try Tarpit which supports a number of compression formats.

DISCLAIMER: Never tried Tarpit myself.
