I-pod Shuffle not showing up in itunes?

I just got a brand new i-pod shuffle. When ever I plug it in to my mac, it blinks a continuous orange, which means not to disconnect from my computer. But it won’t show up in itunes or on my devises! What do I do? My parents will kill me if they found out that I broke it.
