Are young men now required to wear baseball hats at an arrogant angle?

Asked by ketoneus (1169points) May 4th, 2008

I’m only 30, but I just don’t get it. When did Kevin Federline become a role model? Why do almost all guys 14–29 now wear their baseball hats – often with a flat brim – at an angle?

They should also get off my lawn and turn down that rock and roll while they’re at it.

HAHAHAHA! The last sentence made me laugh so hard.
They’re just trying to be G – it’s a look.

Hard to see how a hat could display arrogance . . .

Hat matches the pants hanging below briefs and butt crack. It’s an ensemble thing, I believe. Are they still using boom boxes? I thought those days were over.

Ironic how you’re calling them arrogant.

We call them “dude bros” in my neck of the woods…the same guys who get “tribal” tattoos, but don’t know what tribe it’s from…hilarious. I like the description “arrogant angle’”; been looking for the right words to describe that and you nailed it!

@Ketoneus: I bet that your reaction is directly related to the arrival soon, of a new baby. You are already having the horrible fantasy that he/she will be hanging out with these guys (shudder) or possibly dating one of them.

However, by the time your son or daughter is old enough, the teen-agers will have invented some new things in order to épater le bourgeoisie.”

@gailcalled: thanks for remembering and I’m sure that’s a big part of it. I’ve been a bit of an old man all of my life, but I’m sure my kid(s) will horrify me with a new fad 15 years from now.

“dude bros”? its a great name, ill give you that, but seems more like a term for stoners or hippies.
its a different style. if they want to look like an idiot, I’m certainly not going to stop them. In fact, it saves me time. that way, I don’t have to get to know them then find out they’re lame-tarded. lol, just kidding, that would judgemental.
Btw, theres nothing wrong with rock and roll. Forcing others to listen to it is another story, but that won’t stop me.

ketoneus's avatar

@sndfreQ: “dude bros” does sound like a perfect description to me.

@8light: the rock & roll statement was sarcasm. I was poking fun at myself for asking a question that sounded like it came from an 80 year old man.

gailcalled's avatar

@Ketoneus; I promise you that your kids will do exactly that in perhaps less than 12 years. And chase those dudes away so that you can sleep, for a while longer, at least.

how do you think a hat should be worn??

Loony Bath?

For curiosity’s sake, I feel compelled to ask what’s the difference between this phenomenon and cocked hats worn in the 1940’s?

How can an angle be “arrogant”??

gailcalled's avatar

There is probably a term for that in the list of Greek Rhetorical Devices
If you have the day to waste, check it out. Or read Ulysses, if you have a year. Joyce used all the Greek rhetorical devices.

Synecdoche, Metonymy, alliteration, metaphor, etc.

In context, “arrogant angle” works, where it wouldn’t if you were discussing geometry.

I don’t know about arrogant, but it sure makes them look idiotic. All I can think when I see someone with a crooked hat is “man, he should learn how to dress himself.” I mean, even a 3 year old is usually capable of putting a hat on straight. Of course, it does’t usually help that their pants are usually sagging down around their knees, like they took a big dump in them.

Babo's avatar

When I see anyone wearing a hat like that, I just laugh!

TheHaight's avatar

I don’t even care. Its the same as any other trend

Wine321's avatar

Who’s to say what is proper dress, and what isn’t? One of the origins of the whole hat thing was to associate with a gang. Most of the kids now r just copying a style.

evelyns_pet_zebra's avatar

I see those guys around. The baggy pants down around their knees is another part of that idiotic form of dress. We have a term for guys that dress like that around here. We call em Brotards. A fun thing to do is to call out to them when you can see their shorts is, “Hey, nice panties!”

mssasham's avatar

Don’t know…but I hate hat’s anyway

hearkat's avatar

I the angle of the hat, and whether or not they curve the brim isn’t an issue to me… But I don’t understand why they leave the sizing stickers on! Has the diameter of ones’ skull become a status issue?

john65pennington's avatar

Its all just a fad and it will soon pass. when i was a kid, the fad was to dye your hair yellow and hang out together. was this the first formation of a “gang”? we harmed no one.
