Why do you need to drink water before taking an ultrasound?

It says on this paper to drink 4–6 bottles and not to pee. I was wondering why that was. Does it help you see the baby better?

The reason for this is that the fluid in the bladder creates a “window” for the beam to pass through. (This provides a good medium for sound conduction.) It also serves as a “landmark” for the technician to get their bearings, so to speak. In addition, a full bladder can change the position of the uterus, taking the flexion out of it and pushing it up so it is easier to scan. A full bladder also moves loops of bowel up and out of the way to make the pelvic organs easier to view.

I find it incredibly ironic (and interesting) that the only post of yours that I’ve responded to was in the “how many sexual partners have you had” thread (three months ago) and your declaration that you believe in abstinence.

Now that’s observation delirium.

Aside; if you cheat, because all that fluid is hard on the bladder, the technicians will then force several more glasses of water down you in situ. After the test, be prepared to run to the toilet.. Once I had to stop on the way home and pee (again) in the woods because that fluid just kept filling up bladder.

This is just me, but I would be very clear on the reason for having an ultrasound or doing anything at all else during the first three or four months of a pregnancy.

For all the reasons Babygalll said. However I’ve never had to drink fluids from an ultrasound during pregnancy. Thank goodness, because I think it would be very uncomfortable to drink that much while pregnant and then have someone pressing on your belly.

@delirium – I never said the ultrasound was for me. Did I?

You said “this paper”. I assumed it was a paper that you had. I would have suspected a person to say “It says on her paper” if it weren’t for you.

vanelokz's avatar

It doesn’t matter who’s paper it is. I simply asked a question not for somebody to make an assumption on who’s “paper” I was reading…

I was just honestly curious what caused such a change in your worldview.

Well to clear things up; no the ultrasound wasn’t for me.
