Is there anything I can do to increase my Mac's microphone input volume?

I tried going into System Preferences and increasing it, but it only made it worse. Are there any applications out there that will work with my built-in microphone to make it louder?

Speak louder.

With external mics, you can run them through a pre-amp. I don’t think there is a way to increase the gain on the built-in mic apart from the System Prefs “input volume” slider, unless the app you’re using to record has a gain setting.

mine’s always a bit too loud, is there something in the recording app itself ?
