What time will the App Store be released?

Asked by EnzoX24 (1991points) July 10th, 2008

Will it be some time tonight, or tomorrow morning? I’m not that tired right now, so if it is around Midnight-1 am Eastern I can wait.

It’s been out, go here to download the 2.0 firmware and there you go.

Wait, let me rephrase, I have the App Store, but when can I get it on my Iphone. May bad, said the wrong thing.

EnzoX24's avatar

Oh wait, thats not the new Itunes is it? So this right here is the new firmware?

richardhenry's avatar

Why isn’t that being distributed through iTunes? * confused *

xxporkxsodaxx's avatar

Yea, firmware for your iPhone. If your on a Mac, hold option and click “Check For Updates”, on Windows I think it’s shift (something in the lower left hand side, just try around if it doesn’t work) and then select the firmware.

@RH, It will be when it launches in America(Pacific Time), they are posting it for New Zealand and other countries that already have it I guess.

If you want to upgrade via iTunes it won’t be available until midnight local time in your time zone. Otherwise of can be done outside of iTunes by downloading the 2.0 update manually, then as pork mentions, go to your 7.7 version of iTunes and in the sync page, option click on the restore button and locate the software installer.

Seeing as your on the east coast, wait another fifteen minutes and you should be good to go with the direct upgrade on iTunes-just be sure to update iTunes to 7.7 first or you won’t be able to see the app store in iTunes store.

p.s. Make sue you do a full backup of your iPhone first, as the 2.0 update erases all data from the iPhone, installs the firmware, then makes you restore the data from the backup.

EnzoX24's avatar

By backup, do you mean iTunes library, then ya. Its all on my hard drive somewhere.

Not to try and get off topic, but if you watch the new commercial doesn’t the scree look a little farther away from the lengthwise sides? Maybe it’s just me but it kind of looks that way.

Here’s the link in case you need to look.

xxporkxsodaxx's avatar

No as in your iPhone, there shouldn’t be a problem, it does it automatically when you sync it with your computer.

sndfreQ's avatar

Do a sync in iTunes-back up your calendar, contacts, notes, etc. as well as any direct downloads to the phone made via the iTunes store app on the iPhone.

Oooh yay. Downloading the manual update now. BTW, is this midnight on the evening of the 11th? Or midnight on the morning of the 11th? The morning of the 11th already passed a few hours ago.

EnzoX24's avatar

Ok its downloading on my Iphone now, but how long does it repare the phone for the update? Its going on like 5 minutes now.

richardhenry's avatar

It takes a few minutes. Not long. It’s basically just like a restore, if you’ve ever done that.

xxporkxsodaxx's avatar

It actually took longer for me, I’m not sure why but I think it had to do with it being a 2.x.x being put onto a 1.x.x, I heard something regarding to that factor but I’m not sure if that was it.

That would be 12AM July 11th.

richardhenry's avatar

Okay, that’s bizarre. iTunes is telling me there isn’t any available updates, and it’s 5:04am on the 11th…

xxporkxsodaxx's avatar

Hmm, maybe I was right the first time with it being 12AM -7GMT, so that would be 9AM for the UK, right?

If you don’t want to pay for Super Monkey Ball, I’ll message you the link for the full free version.

EnzoX24's avatar

Well its restoring now, so it looks like it worked. Thanks everybody!

For those who can’t do the auto update in iTunes, http://macrumors.com had an article on the manual download and install instructions (read all the instructions in the blog, dont unzip the downloaded firmware, just rename it by removing .zip and leaving .ipsw as the tag for the file):

http://www.macrumors.com/2008/07/10/iphone-2–0-firmware-5a347-available-early/

richardhenry's avatar

Damn… it automatically unzipped because I was using Safari. If I re-zip it, iTunes says it cannot be installed… what’s the plan?

sndfreQ's avatar

Oops-I just read the blog link I posted, and Apple pulled the direct download link from the site!!! Ouch; sorry about that;

If you are able to download it, first go to your Safari Preferences, then in General, un-check the box next to “Open Safe Files After Downloading” so that Safari doesn’t automatically unzip the file; then when the .zip file is re-downloaded, reveal it in Finder (click on the magnifying glass icon in the Downloads window) then click once on the filename, and from the end of the name, backspace until you remove the ”.zip” part of the file, hit return, confirm the new tag when the pop-up comes up, then you’re set.

Next, open iTunes 7.7, plug in the iPhone, go to the info tab where you would normally restore, and Option-Click on the “Restore” button; which pulls up a window that allows you to navigate to the direcory where the new firmware .ipsw file is-click on it, and you’re on your way!

fyi it took me about 25 minutes to install/update; then I had to do a restore from backup for the contacts, mail accounts, media, etc.; in other words, don’t complete the setup as a new iPhone, or you’ll be starting completely over on programming the iPhone…

richardhenry's avatar

Re-zipped the archive using a raw command line zip utility and it’s currently in the process of installing. Yay! Also: remember to go into the root of the package to zip, not the whole folder.

@richard, man, you seem to be on here ‘round the clock. Gauging by when you were on the other day compared to the time now, I’d guess you get about 87 minutes of sleep a nite. Are you the contributing author for today’s xkcd?

richardhenry's avatar

It worked! But am I supposed to have a Contacts app on the iPhone? Seems a bit strange considering it’s all in the Phone app…

@robmandu: I had a meeting at 10am yesterday, went to bed at midday, woke up at 6pm, went out at 8pm, then went back to a friends house and we watched movies all night until 6am. Which makes me the guy on the left.

@Pork What’s the link for SMB?

xxporkxsodaxx's avatar

@Wine, well I was downloading it, but then when I dragged it into my library it needed an authorization code, sorry :(
