Thunderbird (mozilla) not syncing read email?

does anyone know how to fix this I have a great simple desktop set up for my mother, but when an email is read in thunderbird, it remains unread in gmail, any way to get around this?

issue resolved:
POP was still turned on, and thunderbird set using POP instead of IMAP (since IMAP is a newer feature)

now it works!
