How to buy a domain name?

Asked by wabarr (432points) | asked August 14th, 2008 | 8 responses | “Great Question” (1points) | Flag as…

I want to set up a very basic static personal home page, hosted for free on my university’s webspace. But I would like to have a catchy domain name mask. Any thoughts on the best company to go through? A google search seems to return a bewildering number of companies selling domain names. Are these all likely to be legit?

Dreamhost is legit and they send amusing newsletters each month.

Godaddy.com and Register.com are highly reputable and inexpensive.

I recommend 1&1. They’re the cheapest, in my experience, and I’ve never had trouble with them.

GoDaddy is evil. Though it’s probably just me, but I’ve never had a good experience with them and I’ve been through a lot of companies.

GoDaddy and 1&1 actually have pretty poor reputations.

Register.com is really expensive. I buy my domain names from GoDaddy, because it’s fairly cheap. GoDaddy is alright, despite it’s reputation, if you know what you’re doing; if you don’t, you’ll likely end up buy a bunch of stuff you don’t need.

Let me amend my recommendation. I buy from 1&1, because they’re the cheapest, but I don’t use them for hosting, and I don’t even use their nameservers. I buy the domains from them, but I host with another company and I point the domains at that company’s nameservers. For that purpose, I think 1&1 is the best deal.
