How do I compress a large PDF from a mac so I can send it VIA email?

Having a hard time finding MAC compression files, does any one have a suggestion? Its 19MBS PDF. and my gmail is taking over an hour to upload it. I want to stop it because I dont know why it is taking so long and compress the file, I have ten others, Its a thesis, I need to send to the university, they only want PDF. And they are in another country so just making a CD is out of the question.

Do you have the original source text as a file?

It sounds like your PDF is made from each page as an image, which makes it much much bigger (and harder to read) than if it uses the actual text. If you have the original text, your best bet would be to regenerate the PDF so it’s small. The easiest way to do this is probably using OpenOffice.

In the Finder, right click (or control-click) on the file’s icon, and choose Compress.

Alternately, use Acrobat Distiller to reduce the file size as much as possible, and then compress it in Finder.

@cwilbur: If you’re using Mac OS X Tiger instead of Leopard, the entry on the menu is “Archive”. Does the same thing… just thought I should mention that.
