Suggestions for an interesting, funky hotel in San Francisco?

Asked by figbash (7483points) August 23rd, 2008

I’m going to San Francisco on Labor Day weekend and have been looking for a great place to stay that not only has character, but isn’t extremely overpriced. Any suggestions based on experience?

We stayed once at a hotel called “Hotel Californian.” I think that property could fit the bill.

Luckily, San Francisco abounds with them.

The old section of the St. Francis is fun. (Union Square)

The Palace Hotel has the cachet of having a President die there “officially.” Actually, he died in the saddle in a nearby house of ill repute, but Harding was carried back to the hotel for posterity.

The Chancellor Hotel in Union Square is fun, and they give you a rubber ducky.

The Mark Hopkins is full of robber baron chic and has a revolving bar with a nice view of the city. (Top of the Mark)

Try the SF Zen Center. It has a lovely little apt on the third floor, with a balcony overlooking a courtyard with fountain and plants. The only downsize is that the monks and guests get up at 5:00AM to chant. Someone bangs a huge gong.

Hotel Triton. Near Chinatown, Union Sq. It’s a kimpton hotel and has a happy hour with free wine. It is pretty hip as they go, lots of cool art. Check it!

I stayed at the Hotel Bijou once. Each room is named after a movie that was made in the city back in the day. The rooms are a little small, though.

Enjoy your visit.
