heyyy that’s the same as in Italian, I wonder if it got something to do with those Latin speaking Romans, lol

In Italian, it is Lago di Como and Lago di Lugano, since they are place names. Lago Maggiore = big lake.

In French it is le lac de Côme. So I would speculate that the Portuguese would have a parallel construction. ( I just found the translation to Portuguese = Lago de Como.)
