i like sndfreQ’s answer. that’s how i would awnser this question in a lighthearted way, but right now i feel like being a bit deeper.
i grew up in a Christian community, but found that everyone i knew was pretty much a complete hypocrit. i’m still figuring what i beleive. all i know right now is that there’s some sort of God out there.
i take ideas from bunches of religions. i read the bible and go to it when i feel i need to, but i’m also quite interested in buddhism and the likes.
@Lefteh: You mean you don’t like catholic half-shade vampires that practice black magic and are thousands of years old and still in high school? For shame.
@Darknymph: The problem is that even if lefteh – and everyone else – left this thread, it’s not like he and the rest of us will escape the topic….....it has spread to just about every current/recent thread on this site! It’s almost like having Jehova’s Witnesses for neighbours…...there is no escaping the one and only topic that preoccupies them! Some might consider it one-sided and tedious if one is not equally fascinated by the topic.
It has infiltrated the site. I don’t have a problem with you believing in that…stuff. I just don’t want to hear about it in every thread. If you think that Fluther is an appropriate venue for attempting to spread witchcraft, dark magic, and vampirism (that might be a word), perhaps you should take a quick look at the Guidelines and refresh yourselves with the goals of the website.
[Fluther Moderator]: Everyone involved here understands what the score is here (you know who you are). Please keep the thread on-topic and leave personal attacks for another site…As for trolls, I know of a “spell” to vaporize them-all have been warned ;)
Guys please, @all, just realize we are easily insulted about anything against us, We haven’t had it good since the religion started, and the last thing we need for more insult.
On a related note, I realized by the thread how the dichotomy between Christianity and Paganism emerges-it would almost seem that one emerges from the other; I have friends (not Christian or Catholic), who embrace the arts and Wiccan, and I find it interesting perspectives to have of the energies of the world, nature and the human condition…to each his own I say-on the condition that no faith persecuted another for their beliefs.
I lean much more toward Agnostic, and appreciated JA’s thought on Universal Intellect. My father-in-law, a scientist who has never been religious, seems to subscribe to that line of thought as well.
That we can learn from each other, I think is common thread that binds all belief systems. A fellow Flutherer also pointed out an interesting belief system-that of Secular Humanism. Worth checking out if you are of an open mind (google it).
I am actually a Hedonist who practices Hedonism, and the Wikipedia notes that, “The basic idea behind hedonistic thought is that pleasure is the only thing that is good for a person. This is often used as a justification for evaluating actions in terms of how much pleasure and how little pain (i.e. suffering) they produce. In very simple terms, a hedonist strives to maximize this total pleasure (pleasure minus pain).”
I carry it one step further, in that I try to share my pleasures with others, as long as they are naked, female, and in the same room with me.
Seems like a dangerous discussion for some reason, but I’m an atheist. We could discuss the meaning of faith for an atheist, but it would be fair to say that I probably lack “faith” in the sense that you use the word.
