xmen cartoon from the 90’s. Just started re-watching and I love them.

Good show. I always liked MASH – a friend of mine said that when he was in Afganistan last year, whenever they saw a helecopter fly over they would sing the mash song… that is a show that survived a few generations.

Nimis's avatar

Sopranos. Wait…does cable count?

jlm11f's avatar

House MD. Friends. How I Met Your Mother. Alias. Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Ok. I know you said one, but it’s hardddddddd to decide just one. If I was pressed to choose, i would choose my current favorite show, the one I am eagerly waiting ..and that is House.

mowens's avatar

I LOVE the Sopranos.

However I feel the first 4 seasons were better than the last ones.

MarcIsMyHero's avatar

I think my all time favorite series may be a fairly new one:

The modern Battlestar Gallactica.

It is hands down the best social and political commentary i have ever seen. It’s packed full of action, drama, romance and intrigue while also dealing with all of today’s hot button topics like military occupation, abortion, racism, and democracy- all told through the thin veil of science fiction.
What i love is that i can watch it with geeks, hardcore liberals, or very conservative friends in the military. everyone gets a different message from it. It always prompts further discussion. and the production values are extremely high.

i am only sad that the show is coming to its conclusion with final episodes on their way.

mowens's avatar

Battlestar is good, and it is a shame it will only be 4 seasons. I heard it will be 2009 when it ends.

The first several seasons of Saturday Night Live followed by Taxi, MASH, Cheers, Seinfeld

Family Guy and South Park are also on the cutting edge, consistently funny, and always pushing the limits with what is accepted by the censors in the US. yes, they both owe a lot to the Simpsons (the BEST sitcom ever), but these days family Guy and South Park just cant be beat in terms of laughs and pushing the limit. and once again, social and political commentary. Its important to not take ourselves too seriously. i think these shows help remind us of that.

mowens's avatar

Seinfeld in my opinion is one of the funniest shows ever made. I am also a fan of Boston Legal.

sndfreQ's avatar

Many of mine are cable too (can I list more than one?)

Oh well I’m gonna anyway:

Six Feet Under
Deadwood
Carnivale
The Sopranos
Weeds (a recent addition to my list)

Nimis's avatar

Cable:
Entourage
Flight of The Concords
The Sopranos (my all-time favourite…I just like to alphabetize needlessly)

Not Cable:
Arrested Development
Curb Your Enthusiasm
How I Met Your Mother
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia (1st season)
Lost
The Office
Project Runway
Pushing Daisies

Freaks and Geeks

MarcIsMyHero's avatar

@jimmy, Freaks and Geeks and its sibling Undecared are both amazing shows. sad they were both pulled after only one season. I keep hoping for a follow up to Freaks and Geeks. The gang is after all pretty much still together. i sometimes like to think of Knocked up as the unofficial follow up i guess.

arcoarena's avatar

oh yeah! Freaks and Geeks.

Wow I seriously am in love with that show. but yeah anything judd apatow has done has been awesome. and yeah I agree with Marcis that they are pretty much still together but judd apatow stated that it actually was fortunate that they canceled after one season since the geeks aged and grew so much after the first season that it would have made hard for continuing writing the same sort of story line. If you listen to the commentary on the freaks and geeks dvd, john francis daley sounds like he’s 20 only like 1 or so years later and if you saw him in waiting he grew to be 6’ tall too.

I always wondered what was going to happen to sam’s parents and nick and lindsay. haha Im such a loser but I fit so stereotypically into both groups. anyway great show and very sad

I’m just so glad all their careers went well after the show!

also weeds, heroes, californication, family guy, futurama, boy meets world (lol, but seriously….so good) probably more. :)

Firefly
Red Dwarf
Couplings (UK version)
Absolutely Fabulous
Doctor Who
Pushing Daisies
House
Torchwood

AstroChuck's avatar

Just one? Impossible. I’m amazed at how many of mine are listed above by Tantigirl. Mine are:

Star Trek (original series)
Doctor Who
Battlestar Galactica (reworked series)
Red Dwarf
Torchwood
Firefly
The Phil Silvers Show (Sgt. Bilko)
Rome
Mr. Bean
Not in any particular order.

Fallstand's avatar

Entourage

Can’t people narrow down a favorite anymore? People insist on listing 10–20 things when asked their favorite “something” on here.

AstroChuck's avatar

Sorry. Don’t have just one. What do you want me do?

Nimis's avatar

Fall: When everyone started listing, I couldn’t help myself.

No.
Self.
Control.

Simpson’s

Big surprise huh.

Mr_M's avatar

Seinfeld. I never missed it.

Les's avatar

Wow. I’m surprised no one has said it yet:
X-Files.

tupara's avatar

Twin Peaks.

Nimis's avatar

Tup: Whoa. I thought I just said “Twin Peaks”.
Note to self: Get a different avatar.

SuperMouse's avatar

I just noticed, not a single person answered Heroes! Could it be the most over-hyped show of all time?

@Nimis, isn’t Curb Your Enthusiasm on HBO?

Nimis's avatar

SuperM: Whoops. Indeed it is. For some reason though, I always put that show together with Arrested Development in my mind.

Bri_L's avatar

OOooo. X-Files was cool. I miss that.

SuperMouse's avatar

@Nimis, cable or broadcast, Curb Your Enthusiasm and Arrested Development are two of the best comedies ever!

trudacia's avatar

Naming just one is easy…Buffy the Vampire Slayer was my favorite show EVER! I didn’t catch it while it was on but years later I rented and then purchased every season. For about a year I watched at least one episode a day and was sort of in a Buffy trance. I’m still going through withdrawals.

cyndyh's avatar

Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Angel
Firefly
Battlestar Galactica (the newer one)
Stargate (SG-1 and Atlantis)
Ab Fab
Spaced
Arrested Development
Dr. Who
Torchwood

I can’t pick just one, and I don’t have to. :^>

breedmitch's avatar

Arrested Development, 30 Rock, Absolutely Fabulous, Soap, The Simpsons, Little Brittan.

aneedleinthehayy's avatar

Avatar: The Last Airbender!!
I also thoroughly enjoy Family Guy.

Bri_L's avatar

@ Breedmitch – Arrested Development is a show where the worst show from it is better than the best of most of the comedies on today. It was cut down way to young.

breedmitch's avatar

Hear, hear.

Bob Loblaw
Analrapist.

Too much!

Bri_L's avatar

I can’t not-laugh when I hear Bob Loblaw

hehehe “hey brother”

hipnek's avatar

Everything created by Joss Whedon -namely Buffy, Angel, and Firefly. Battlestar Galactica, Monty Python’s Flying Circus, The Prisoner

cyndyh's avatar

Arrested Development was awesome. The two Lucille always made me laugh. I love Liza Minnelli in that show! And David Cross is always a hoot.

I saw David Cross’s ass at Bumbershoot. :^>

Bri_L's avatar

Liza Minnelli was so good. I loved the way she got the “dizzies”.

I like the blan, I mean Ann story line.

mowens's avatar

xfiles was great…. but got bad toward the end. It was too bad too because i loved that show.

cyndyh's avatar

@Bri, See I don’t remember that, so now I’ll have to watch it again. I loved the whole thing with Gob’s psuedo-girlfriend being in love with “somebody named Hermano”. LOL!

Bri_L's avatar

Heheheh

Gob keeps saying brother in other languages, then says “funny, I had 4 years of spanish and I can only say it in French”.

cyndyh's avatar

heheheh Doesn’t that show make you think your own family might be pretty sane or at least relatively sane? :^>

Bri_L's avatar

Haha. No doubt. I could actually sit and watch all three seasons start to finish without stopping.

cyndyh's avatar

Ha. I think I did at least once. I think, with the exception of Dr. Who, I’ve seen all of all my favorites in a marathon fashion at some point or another.

danny's avatar

The Wire for tv series…and for a mini series I must say Band of Brothers.

Mr_M's avatar

@mowens, you’re right about X-files. It got bad towards the end. I think these shows milk the storyline so much that, eventually, they run out of ideas. It happened with “ER”, “Desperate Houswives” and others.

Tantigirl's avatar

@danny – ooh yeah, I second the Band of Brothers vote. Great series.

Mr_M's avatar

American Bandstand! A classic!

arcoarena's avatar

@supermouse

i said heroes! that show is definitely amazing

willbrawn's avatar

I love heroes

marinelife's avatar

I really wrestled with my choice, but picked The Tick, because I lknow Fluther has a lot of Firefly fans and it would get mentioned, but I have to say I loved that show. If Whedon was a Flutherer, he might re-think bringing it back.

cyndyh's avatar

I’d be happy with more movies from him, too.

willbrawn's avatar

and if Joss Whedon dosent disappoint his new show Dollhouse will probably be a fav too. (please no one tell me it’s been cut already)

cyndyh's avatar

No no! I’m looking forward to that, too.

Tantigirl's avatar

If it is I will be compelled to commit atrocities on someone’s person!!!

dfwil145's avatar

The Prisoner, Land of the Giants, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Star Trek, Lost in Space

Wine3213's avatar

The Simpsons
Entourage
Heroes
Dragonball Z :p

Brome's avatar

Profit. This series starring Adrian Pasdar as anti-hero Jim Profit only lasted for a few episodes (7 if I remember correctly), but it was as awesome as it was disturbing.

willbrawn's avatar

http://io9.com/5049071/just-how-in-trouble-is-dollhouse this is a little update for the future fans of Dollhouse, if it ever gets made that is.

cyndyh's avatar

Aw, geez. I hope they aren’t just blowing smoke when they say things are fine. I’ve been looking forward to that show.

girlofscience's avatar

Big Love, City Confidential, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Entourage, Extras, Friends, Full House, Law & Order (especially CI), LOST, Monk, Pushing Daisies, Seinfeld, Sex and the City, Tell Me You Love Me, The Office

breedmitch's avatar

Don’t forget The News Hour with Jim Lerher.

Aster's avatar

I didn’t watch any of the above but I could not live without American Bandstand. not sure I’d call that a “series.”
