No, and that’s because one actor alone, does not “make or break” a performance, unless s/he is in a solo show.

The Bonnie Franklin show she was on, was One Day At A Time.

Ok, I really can’t stand Nicole Kidman. There’s something in the mannerisms, but I have a strong audio thing that comes up sometimes. Her accent in almost anything I’ve ever seen her in makes me want to find her vocal coach just to slap that person – hard.

Russel Crowe for the arrogance and hotheaded thing -but I like his voice.

Ok, and I know most people won’t recognize this one: Linda Barker from the old BBC show changing rooms. It’s partly the voice, but also the stupidity of some of her comments “sort of Santa Fe, you know, Mexican”. And she said that more than once in different episodes.

To Mr M What is wrong with Rob Lowe??? I think he is a good actor!

Speaking of voices….Kenley’s voice on Project Runway makes me cringe. And the script Tyra Banks follows on ANTM…“I have 9 beautiful ladies standing before me”...omg, I have to fast forward thru that.

I also cannot stand (in no particular order): Charlize Theron, Star Jones, Bill O’Reilly, Keanu Reeves, Danny Bonaduce, Don Johnson, and that cocky red headed guy that was on NYPD Blue and is now on one of the CSI’s. For that matter, I cannot stand ANY incarnation of CSI.

There are several actors I dislike with a passion for varying reasons, many were mentioned:

Tom Cruise – Yes, a real whack job
Jessica Simpson – talentless moron
Paris Hilton – talentless moron
Pauly Shore – talentless moron
Keanu Reeves – worst actor ever born
Russel Crowe – arrogant prick and not half as good looking as they give him credit for

and I kinda know what you mean about Bonnie Franklin…Fran Drescher has that same effect on me (nails on a chalkboard).

And there are others I don’t like. I also absolutely HATE it when Saturday Night Live has a guest host who isn’t an actor…maybe a singer or an athelete…they just look at the cue cards, flub their lines, act stiff, and there HAVE to be several obligatory sketches about what they’re known for. If you saw the Michael Phelps episode, you know exactly what I mean.

I’m really not a fan of people who are allowed to act because they’re famous for something else…Paris Hilton and Jessica Simpson are good examples.

But here’s the deal. I don’t refuse to watch a movie because someone’s in it. If I did, I would have missed -

Employee of the Month, starring Jessica Simpson. Of course the movie also featured Dax Sheppard, who is funny in just about everything he’s been in, and Dane Cook, who’s standup annoys the hell out of me because he doesn’t actually have any JOKES, but in movies, he generally amuses me.

Son-in-Law – the 1993 Pauly Shore vehicle which when actually forced to watch it after years of resisting honestly made me laugh out loud.

The Bill and Ted Movies – they work for me, exactly BECAUSE Keanu is in his element, playing a vapid moron.

and my ALL TIME FAVORITE MOVIE

Magnolia – An epic movie featuring Tom Cruise in a role with surprising emotional depth. I didn’t want to bitchslap him ONCE.

And hey, you gotta give props to the Matrix (Reeves) and Risky Business (Cruise).

I also can’t STAND Sean Connery, I think he’s an overrated hack, but he’s been in his share of good movies. And if it weren’t for him, we wouldn’t have the brilliant SNL Celebrity Jeopard parodies to laugh at.

I cannot stand Christopher Walken. People love him but for some reason he just irritates me.

Oh yes, Rainman…very good film. Though Will Smith, I’ve found to be a pretty decent actor in most the stuff he’s been in.

I’m a bit different, I’m usually more excited by who wrote or directed a movie than by who stars in it.

@ jlacombe- ah, I don’t get that vibe. I started watching him when he was on busom buddies so maybe that is why. Although I can’t not notice that he doesn’t open the left corner of his mouth.

@dalepetrie – that is different – the only times I can say that matters to me is Spielburg, Pixar and the guy who did Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.

Conversely, I avoid like the plague anything which has Jerry Bruckheimer or Michael Bay attached…mindless action movies don’t do it for me, I need plot. I like interesting, complex stories…it’s OK if stuff blows up, but I’m not in it for that.

And one other note on actors…I used to LOVE Nicholas Cage back when he did intelligent cinema, but since he’s become a big action star, he hasn’t done anything worthwhile.

Will Smith is my #1 yuck. Tom Cruise is a close second.

Nicholas Cage is an arrested adolescent…he wanted to be a superhero when he grew up, and now he can live out his boyhood fantasies by starring in any swinging dick action film that comes his way. It’s a waste of a great acting talent if you ask me.

Adam Sandler, except in Punchdrunk Love, in which he didn’t lisp and squeek.

That French guy in the movies about the immortal person who may be supposed to be Scottish. He has an interesting ugly face, but he doesn’t do anything with it.

susanc, re Sandler…though I think his comedic work is hillarious (I’m a bit off, I know), I understand why people don’t like him. But when he does a dramatic role, he proves he is a HELL of an actor. If you liked Punch Drunk Love (a PT Anderson movie, so you know I LOVED it), you’ve gotta check out Reign Over Me with Sandler and the also always amazing Don Cheadle. That was an INCREDIBLY powerful performance he gave as a man who years later is still having trouble coping with the loss of his family on 9/11. I usually stay away from 9/11 movies, but this one wasn’t “about” 9/11, it was just referencing it like any event in history, which is how movies I think SHOULD handle national tragedies (rather than exploiting them like Bruckheimer). Anyway, if you haven’t seen it, check it out, I think you’ll like it.

I think I have to add Judd Apatow to my list of writer/directors where I’ll see any movie they’re attached to.

I can’t stand Rosie Perez, Renee Zellwegger, Paris Hilton (can you even call her an actress?), Calista Flockhart, Miley Cyrus, Jessica Simpson…she’s just as bad as Paris Hilton.

Tom Cruise. I’ve disliked him way before he became a Scientology freak.
Matt Damon. He is my blond Tom Cruise.
I also try to steer clear of Russell Crowe, and anyone who is a celebrity and not an actor, like Paris or Jessica Simpson.

I can’t f***ing stand quentin tarantino. I’ll admit, I like resevoir dogs and pulp fiction. But lately it’s like he’s been watching gory japanese b-movies and thinking, “hey, I could do that with a bigger budget and people would say I’m a genious!”

and lo and behold, everyone thinks he’s a genious. People have told me “no, it’s not him you don’t like, it’s just his style. you’re not used to it.” Some of my favorite movies are ones tarantino steals ideas pulls his inspiration from: Ichi the killer, Machine girl, and The revenge trilogy.

He’s not creative, he writes terrible dialogue, and his absolute favorite human being on the planet is himself. I can’t stand anything he’s done recently. It actually annoys me. I was literally uncomfortably annoyed in the theater for kill bill. I had to leave, and I never plan on seeing anything else he makes.

(sorry if you’re a fan, i have nothing against you and i’m sure you have awesome taste. Its him i have a problem with, not you at all)

It’s not that I don’t like her, but I can’t take any movie seriously that Jessica Biel is in. I loved that movie where she’s in love with a magician (can’t remember the name right now) but I couldn’t get into the scenes involving her… Plus her accent really sucked.

That asshole kid who was in Transformers, Indiana Jones and all of that. Shit LaDouche or whatever his queer name is. Yes, unusually harsh for Lovelocke, but really, I can’t stand that this “Create-a-Superstar” jerkoff is getting into all of these movies and can’t act his way out of the closet he’s living in.

When the previews were on for Boston Legal before its premiere, I said “Well thats one show I will NEVER watch”. I could not stand either James Spader or William Shatner. Somehow, I got sucked into watching it and its my favorite television program, ever! The writing is incredible and for some reason both those guys are amazing in their parts. I decided they both ROCK!

I can’t stand Burt Reynolds. (can he be considered an actor? Probably not.)

Burt Reynolds was great in Boogie Nights. And like Sean Connery, without him we’d have one less great Celebrity Jeopardy SNL impersonation (thanks to Norm MacDonald).

I think I wore out the mute button while watching AFV and Bob Saget was on. But he’s not an actor is he? Oh yeah Full House. pffft. I rest my case!!

Funny thing about Will Ferrell is I did NOT like him on SNL, but when he started making movies, I thought some of them were actually laugh out loud funny. Old School, Anchorman and Talledega Nights come to mind.

Woody Allen? He’s only one of the most brilliant filmakers of all time.
I find it quite ironic that over 90% of the actors mentioned here all have huge draws and make serious money for Hollywood. If I was a producer and looking to cast for a film, I’d just choose from these lists. :).

I cannot stand Renee Zelwieger. She drives me insane. The way she talks, smiles…..EVERYTHING!!!

True on the quality but the list of world class actors here makes me think it’s just some sour grapes. OK Keannu Reeves, Steven Segal really suck but Christopher Walken(Deer Hunter, Dead Zone), Brad Pitt(Joe Black, FightClub, Legends of the Fall, A River Runs Through It) Charlize Theron( Cider House Rules, phenomenal in Monster and just gorgeous unless you’re a jealous woman) are world class actors. I mean why not add Deniro and Meryl Streep to the list! And just ‘cause they make money doesn’t make’em low quality. And Woody…well maybe it’s a NY thing, but I have never seen any movie (that he’s directed) that I didn’t enjoy.

I’ll agree, I’m the one who said Keanu, but the rest you listed are I think terrific. Where you and I differ is Woody. Annie Hall is an A+, 5 stars, 10 out of 10. But Mighty Aphrodite and crap like that, I’d rather gouge my eyes out than watch THAT again. And it’s not just an earlier vs. later thing…..Match Point was one of the best movies I’ve seen in years…what I have a problem with is every one of his movies has him in it, and he plays himself, and if he isn’t in it, you can always tell what role he WOULD have played. I can only take so much of the Neurotic Jew act.

Yes, fan of both shows which I know are about neurotic Jews, but Larry David is not just neurotic, he’s basically a sociopath, which makes him in a way more palatable than Allen. But having said that, I’m only commenting on what I’ve seen.

I haven’t seen enough Woody Allen to judge to be honest. Here’s the deal with Woody Allen films for me. First one I saw was Everything You’ve Ever Wanted to Know about Sex….But Were Afraid to Ask…and I loved it…it was a lot like a Mel Brooks film. I had always heard how brilliant he was, and then I saw Mighty Aphrodite and I thought, “REALLY?” But OK, everyone has a bad film now and then. Then I saw Celebrity, and Kenneth Brannagh basically did a Woody Allen Impression. Then I saw Hollywood Ending, Anything Else and Small Time Crooks, all of which a) sucked, and b) had someone playing a Woody like character. And I’m thinking, if this guy is such a great auteur, why they hell can’t he write a main character that isn’t Woody Fucking Allen? I saw Annie Hall though and I guess I just assumed he USED to be good, because I was 2 for 2 with older movies, but 0 for 4 with newer ones. And Match Point is the last I’ve seen, but that really didn’t have a Woody Allen character in it. So, I see 7 of your movies and 4 are god-awful, well, I assume you’re overrated, but the fact that he HAS made some movies I’ve enjoyed immensely leads me to believe there MAY be something to his so-called “genuis”. I’ll look at those ones you mentioned, and I have Sleeper which my wife just picked up for a couple bucks on DVD, so I’ll keep trying.

LOL you’re too much. On a lighter note I had a Jewish friend who couldn’t watch either of the shows because it just stressed him out too much. It actually hit too close to home!
As to Allen’s character, he is his own muse and every artist or writer always creates the same work of art over and over again until they die. They just keep refining it.
Try Radio Days as an opener. A very simple movie about his youth in Far Rockaway, narrated by him but without a cameo. A very sweet movie.
Zelig was brilliant and amazing with the technology of the time it was created.

I’m plenty open to that. I guess the other thing about the Curb Your Enthusiasm & Seinfeld vs. Allen movies that makes it somehow “different” is that you expect in a serial program to see the same character. And if movies are serialized, that’s one thing as well, sequels you can see the same character over and over. But you have a movie, then you have another movie, and movie a and movie b have absolutely nothing to do with each other, yet you see the same character, only with a different name and backstory, that just doesn’t fit as well. And re Curb, yes, I have sometimes almost had to turn that off, Larry David does make me just stressed out. I’ll try a few more Allen movies, but I can understand why having seen a couple of his films that some would say they have a hard time watching him in anything. I say in his case there’s a fine line between inspiration and self parody, and when he’s crossed it, the results haven’t been good. I just have to see more of the examples of him not crossing it.

Actors make up about 50% of the decision to see a movie for me. I will not see anything with: Ashton Kutcher or Jimmy Fallon. I really don’t understand why people think they are funny. I don’t get it. I also find everyone from the cast of “Friends” irritating.
On the other hand I will see ANYTHING (even if the plot doesn’t interest me) with:
anyone from “Arrested Development”.

Yeah, I have heard that “The Butterfly Effect” is a very good movie…I just can’t do it. He bothers me that much. I know, it makes no sense…

Fallon laughs too much at his own jokes and from what I’ve seen so far on Late Night, he’s way too stiff. He’s also a lot like Carson Daly in his whole “look at how cool I am because I know about the things the kids like” persona, which is ironic, because one of Fallon’s funniest lines in SNL was “I’m Carson Daly, and I’m a tool.” But I have to say I took perverse pleasure in watching Fallon and Horatio Sanz crack up in the middle of every single sketch they ever did together. If you want to make his Late Night a success, he should bring Sanz on as a sidekick. Kutcher on the other hand was absolutely the perfect fit to play Kelso on That 70s Show, but the funniest thing about Dude…Where’s My Car was the title. But having said that, I’d watch a movie with both of them in it before I’d watch another Keanu Reeves movie (Bill and Ted notwithstanding…Ted “Theodore” Logan was to the Bill and Ted movies what Michael Kelso was to That 70s Show…the only thing the actors playing them ever did that was really worth watching).

Bredan Fraser. I have no idea why, but he just irks me to my very core.
