Can I hide the Elements Gallery?

In Mac Word 08, the elements gallery are the options above the ruler that say Document Elements, Quick Tables, Charts, SmartArt Graphics, and WordArt. Can I hide this?

I tried everything I could think of to remove it (including manually looking through a pile of plist files). I couldn’t find a way to remove it. And after some googling it looks like I am not alone.

And I agree that it is dumb that they don’t have an option to turn it off.
