What is your purpose here on fluther?

Asked by jonsblond (43667points) December 30th, 2008 from iPhone

My first experience on fluther was to find someone. Then I asked for input concerning some personal problems and found some very helpful people. I have been to other sites but have found the community here at fluther to be the most intelligent, thoughtful and helpful so far. My question to you… Are you here to ask, answer or charm with your wit?

Ask, answer, charm… how else would you fluther? I enjoy the harassment-free environment (thank you monitors) and the range of ageless advice that this site seems to draw. We keep it nice and tidy and from what I have seen, participants and passer-bys have been rewarded as such.

I,m here to cause mayhem.

I am concidering myself a Fluther-noob, but I like what I see. My next task would be not to start a thread that will be removed again…:) Think I am here cause it’s a cool way of social networking and time killing.

A little bit of everything if I’m doing this right.

For me, Fluther is a chance to peek into the heads of an interesting variety of folks. People absolutely fascinate me, but I’m a bit too shy to go out in the world and just start lots of conversations with random people (deep down, that’s really what I’d like to do), and my routine doesn’t really expose me to a wide variety of people.

For someone who’s interested in human nature, Fluther is like a candy store. The questions themselves are revealing, of course (wow, the things people wonder about!), but then you get people coming at that question from all kinds of angles, some very surprising. The actual information exchanged here is less interesting to me than the minds behind this whole process.

NOT lurve.
Answering questions. I don’t ask many, but I still ask a bit.
I think I might be a pessimist :S.

I originally came here because I liked to answer questions that are hard to answer like, is time travel possible. or something, that just made me think. Then for myself, I usually find something to ask to give me insight into something like whats a good job. Then to satisfy my desire to debate, I usually just find hot topics and take a side. So I guess all three but I mostly like to debate now days.

jbfletcherfan's avatar

I came here because a lot of my friends from Askville jumped over here for a while. Even tho they went back to AV, I’ve stayed here, too. Now that I’ve been here for a while, I come for the questions & to see what’s going on. I recognize some of the posters here now. But the best thing is that an old friend found me here that I’d lost touch with.

90s_kid's avatar

Fluther is better. It’s more community-like.

I lurve you all!

To ask, answer and ponder with some of the smartest people I’ve ever had the good fortune to communicate with.

LostInParadise's avatar

To ask, to answer and to share opinions. Along the way I have come across some rather interesting people, but that is just a fringe benefit.

GAMBIT's avatar

To learn, have fun and keep the cobwebs out of my ears.

Bluefreedom's avatar

I’m here on Fluther to ask, answer, and socialize. The ambience here is naturally comfortable, the people are down to earth and very friendly, and the whole experience is completely worthwhile.

I suspect that everyone likes to espouse an answer or opinion and be recognized (why else would we tell all of those stories and jokes at parties?).

Fluther creates an opportunity to share knowledge gained, and perhaps even occasionally impress someone (and who doesn’t enjoy that?). I like being able to help an individual with my training and experience (although I am frustrated here just as in real life by people that ask my professional opinion and then completely disregard my answer and do what they had planned to do anyway).

I’ve also unexpectedly found a community of individuals that I admire and respect. I enjoy the humor and camaraderie (I probably indulge in humor too much), and I like being able to post both functional questions (how do I…) and bizarre, random musings (what’s that bad movie….).

The thing that I don’t like is those individuals that don’t respect the community and post inane and uneducated answers just to hear themselves talk, flame wars, and trite repetitive question posts.

@90s kid Are you being facetious?

I fluther to lower my carbon footprint. For most other conversations, I have to drive somewhere.
Plus, what Harp said, exactly. This is a candy store of humanity.

I’m here to learn and entertain myself. I love Fluther!!!

I’m also here to meet a Squirrell, she will then collect my nuts and we will climb the biggest Giant Redwood and live there forever.

Sharing with others bits of knowledge that I might not ever have other use for. It always makes me really happy when I see a question that I can give a good answer to. There is something utterly satisfying about it. And when I need some strange information that isn’t always readily accessible on the internet or some such thing, a quick fluther answer is almost guaranteed.

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@Oasis..LOLLLL..well, ‘here I is’!

tiffyandthewall's avatar

my original purpose was to find help on my chemistry lab which didn’t happen.
however, since that fateful day my purpose has definitely changed haha. i just really like coming on here and trying to help people and just talking about these random things with such a variety of people. i’ve nearly abandoned myspace.

oasis's avatar

@jbfletch,grab them “nuts“and lets go!

ctimm15's avatar

just to answer some questions, muck around ^^^ , to ask our own triky questions and to just have fun and enjoy our selves

syz's avatar

Is that the royal “we”?

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@Oasis…..I’m right behind you.

Silliness = fluther. :-)

Knotmyday's avatar

Just here to discuss and learn, and throw my two cents in from time to time. Not sure if that qualifies as a “purpose,” but here I am.

cookieman's avatar

Initially signed on to ask some questions, share some answers and learn a thing or two.

Now that I’ve been here a while, I’m pleased to find most fellow Flutherites to be very intelligent, respectful of others, up for a good debate, and a generally thoughtful bunch.

Which is more than I can say for most of the people I know in real life.

wundayatta's avatar

I was looking for a place that wasn’t a high school—no, junior high atmosphere. Some place that doesn’t get all freaked out if you say “fuck” or “shit” or have an avatar that is a map of the world superimposed on a woman’s ass.

I was looking for a place where people are generally sensible and respectful, or, at least, the disrespectful posts were deleted.

I was looking for a place with smart people who could carry on an interesting conversation, and where smart questions were asked.

I was looking for a place where people were reasonably social, and they might even not despise me, or fool me, or jerk me around.

I’ve gotten most, but not all of those things at fluther.

asmonet's avatar

@daloon: Funny, I’ve gotten all of those things here.

wundayatta's avatar

@asmonet: but you’re prettier, smarter, and less crotchety than I am. ;-)

cookieman's avatar

Well we don’t know if asmonet’s prettier – you didn’t post your picture daloon.

You may very well be adorable.

—For the pleasure of sharing something I know with someone who wants to know it.
—For the stimulation of confronting questions I absolutely never would have thought of myself.
—For the enrichment of soaking up other people’s knowledge and ideas.
—For the exercise of articulating my own opinions clearly and briefly.
—For the entertainment of interacting in a diverse and generally intelligent community where there is a quality of warmth, a code of civility, and a spirit of good humor.

wundayatta's avatar

@cprevite: no you don’t know, and I’m not about to show you. You’d lose your lunch!

asmonet's avatar

@daloon: You get a GA, and I will continue blushing.

Damn it, cprevite! Let me have my moment!

Jeruba's avatar

I vote for Asmonet as prettier because I take Daloon as a man of his word. But Daloon could still be adorable and probably is.

The crotchetiness award is up for grabs, though.

wundayatta's avatar

Isn’t it axiomatic that women are prettier than men? Or more attractive? Or whatever the appropriate description is?

Adorable? If that means it is possible to adore me (or anyone), than I will admit to the possibility. But, as my son says, “I’m not cute…. I’m dangerous!” Is there a man in the world who wants to be adorable? Isn’t that what you say about puppies and babies? I may have a tail, but it sure don’t wag. put that in your pipe and smoke it. I’m not sure what it means, either. What do you expect for me being up past my bedtime?

asmonet's avatar

I’m sure Richard Simmons thinks of himself as adorable.

cookieman's avatar

@asmonet: Terribly sorry. I just hate to see daloon badmouth himself.

But fear not, it is clearly evident how pretty you are.

wundayatta's avatar

sorry—I have a complex about how I look. don’t worry about it—I’d love to believe that true beauty lies within, but I’ve seen too much evidence that suggests otherwise. It would be pretty cool to spend one day in the body of someone who drew stares —like asmonet, only male

cookieman's avatar

@daloon: fair enough.

asmonet's avatar

shoosh, you guys are gonna give me a complex.

I had an actual question and looked around the internet for the answer, and that’s how I found this site and thought I’d also ask here. My question was never answered, but I find some interesting discussions going on, so I keep coming for more. It’s an interesting forum of ideas, rather than (as I’d originally I thought) a way to get answers.

hammer43's avatar

my purpose on here is to answer questions and sometimes ask questions, I feel the answers on here very good and I love all of the imput people put into all of the conversations good and bad.

90s_kid's avatar

I am on fluther because of Jeruba’s reasons lurvie

SABOTEUR's avatar

I’m here because I enjoy answering questions online.

Doing so allows me the opportunity to entertain the illusion that I know what i’m talking about.

iwamoto's avatar

I used to be here for answers, now i’m just here to get agitated and imagine myself beating up other flutherites…
