Can i change the name of my wireless network?

You need to log in to your router and change the SSID.

What is your router?
Check the brand and model of your router online and see what it’s IP is…(usually 192.168.1.1 try that)

The username is often blank and the password is (by default) “admin”
Log in and change the SSID. (prob under general settings)

Each router has its own unique control panel and access method. For example, a Linksys-branded router’s control panel might be brought up by pointing your browser a http://192.168.1.1 whereas a NetGear-branded router’s control panel is at http://routerlogin.com/start.htm. The gist is, you need to look it up in the owner’s manual… or, if you’re lucky, some routers actually print out the access url on the case somewhere (like is done with the serial number).

Finally, most wireless routers also support wired connections.

If you’re gonna change the SSID, you’ll want to first connect your PC/Mac to your router with an ethernet cable. [ If you don’t, your PC/Mac will actually lose the wireless connection when the SSID changes. Not a show stopper, but can be a bit jarring when you hit the Save button (after changing the SSID) and then… nothing. Your browser times out and complains there’s no network conn. ]

So… the SSID is an aspect of the wireless side of your router (not the wired part). Meaning that, once you’ve connected to your router’s control panel, you’ll want to navigate to the set of options pertaining to the wireless functionality. Change it to what you want. Save.

Now… open your Network control panel on your PC/Mac. And delete the old profile for your wireless network with the old SSID name. Then define a new profile for your network once your PC/Mac finds the new SSID.
