I would think that she meant it has a compliment!

Pop culture seems to vote a big yes.

Sure, if he is.

My son came home the other night and reported that some guys at a bar had told him he was beautiful. I responded, “Well, they’re right.”

A man can definitely be physically beautiful as well as have a beautiful personality.

asmonet's avatar

Beautiful is fine, pretty is a bit girly.

Beautiful, as @aprilsimnel hinted, has a wider set of connotations. I.e., it doesn’t merely refer to physical beauty, but it can also, and sometimes exclusively refers to personality and presence and the relationship. “You’r beautiful, man,” if a guy is saying it to another guy.

However, my son, age 9, hates to be called beautiful. Boys are handsome and/or dangerous. They are not beautiful! (Or pretty.)

aprilsimnel's avatar

@asmonet – Yeah, I also think “pretty” is a Zac Efron, or any guy who’d be featured in an issue of Non-Threatening Boys Magazine.

Lisa Bonet’s husband, Jason Momoa? Physically, he’s quite beautiful in the “Golden Ratio,” ancient Greek sense. It was, once upon a time, extremely attractive men who were seen as the pinnacles of human beauty, not women.

Feminism can make “beautiful” an equal-opportunity word once again! :D

jessturtle23's avatar

Yes, and I reserve beautiful for totall package guys.

asmonet's avatar

Jason Momoa is fucking gorgeous.
NERD MOMENT: I loved him on Stargate: Atlantis. :D

stephen's avatar

@AlfredaPrufrock i m not sure about that, but its the first time a girl said that to me n i feel really weird, i m here

asmonet's avatar

Yeah, you’re a good lookin’ dude. ;)
I think you kind of look like Shia LaBeouf.

jessturtle23's avatar

You are handsome.

stephen's avatar

@jessturtle23 i d like that compliment but not beautiful:

asmonet's avatar

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, stephen. If your beholder thinks you’re beautiful, roll with it.

stephen's avatar

@asmonet i just think they think u have a girly personality when they say ur beautiful,

asmonet's avatar

Nah, I wouldn’t go that far. Despite what pop culture would have you believe women are far more straight forward than we’re given credit for. If you’re ever confused by what a woman is saying to you ask them this:

“How so?”

She will explain. Problem solved. :)

I’m a beautiful person and if anyone on Fluther wants to call me that, it’s okay by me.

I’m not pretty though, so pass on calling me that, okay? :o)

PnL's avatar

Bluefreedom – you are beautiful :)

cyndyh's avatar

Yeah, “beautiful” is a good thing for men as well as women. You don’t want to be called “pretty”, though, unless you’re in drag and into looking pretty.

shadling21's avatar

Beauty isn’t masculine or feminine.

I frequently call my good friend “gorgeous”. Similarly, that word is often assumed to refer to feminine beauty. But honestly, I’m just trying to describe the way that his physical appearance transcends typical male attractiveness.

Dude, it is most definitely a compliment.

Darwin's avatar

I truly believe there are beautiful men – I saw one the other day at the gym.

And then there is Johnny Depp. Sigh

cyndyh's avatar

Ah, yes, Johnny Depp and Jason Momoa. (When it looked like Ronan was dead on SG-A the other day, I had to stop the TiVo. They just can’t kill off Ronan, and lucky for them they didn’t. :^> )

Brad Pitt is looking better and better with age. He used to be a bit too pretty, but lately? Damn.

“Lovely” is also a word that comes to mind.

Bluefreedom's avatar

@PnL. Coming from a moderator, that’s twice as nice! Thanks!

alive's avatar

did she mean it in a weird way? i doubt it, she probably just meant it in a nice way, no need to “feel really weird” just feel flattered

DrasticDreamer's avatar

Nah, “beautiful” is perfectly acceptable when complimenting a guy. Because beautiful is generally used as a much higher compliment than “hot”, “cute”, “attractive”, etc. When I say a man is beautiful, it means he’s above and beyond average.

tiffyandthewall's avatar

i’m completely guilty of using ‘beautiful’ to describe guys.
it’s definitely a compliment haha.

maybe_KB's avatar

stephen's avatar
