What’s your definition of intellectual? Nice tag.

madcapper's avatar

haha I lurve the tag

I’m not there yet. I like to think of myself as an ‘enlightenee’ awaiting to be taught by the ‘enlighteners’ and other fine intellectuals here on Fluther. One of these days, when I’ve learned enough material, I might just earn the label of intellectual.

NaturalMineralWater's avatar

I like to pretend.

cprevite's avatar

I’m more of an outallectual.

artificialard's avatar

Being part of a community that asks questions and strives to find the right answer, I couldn’t think of a better example of the entire Fluther community being intellectuals.

Or they just want to know ‘WHY MY IPOD wont play WMA FILEZZZ?? I TRIED REBOT’

I would answer this question but I don’t find it stimulating enough to warrant my interest.

If, by ‘intellectual’, you mean ‘one who uses his or her intelligence and analytical thinking, either in their profession or for the benefit of personal pursuits’, then yes.

If, by ‘intellectual’, you mean ‘one who lives with his or her head up his or her ass’, then no.

ark_a_dong's avatar

I honestly don’t know why I asked this question.

Bluefreedom's avatar

@ark_a_dong. I think it was because you are naturally inquisitive which shows intellectualism on your part. Good work.

augustlan's avatar

@ark_a_dong Well how about it…do you consider yourself one?

ark_a_dong's avatar

@augustlan

I don’t know if I do, and maybe that’s why I’ve asked this.

honest question, is narcissism a bad thing?

augustlan's avatar

Only if it is excessive. In it’s literal meaning, it is ‘self-love’, which everyone should have :)

augustlan's avatar

I just looked at your avatar…you certainly have the mustache of an intellectual! Awesome.

Intellectu-whut?

I’m nosy and curious. Does that count?

Kiev749's avatar

I would say I have flashes of brilliance rather than intelectual.

asmonet's avatar

I like to think so.

Sorceren's avatar

An intellectual what?

I think the article “an” is too limiting.

Are you talking left-brain v. right-brain, or philosophical rather than pragmatic, or what? What is the alternative to being “an” intellectual — being a dunce?

Mensa v. Densa?

I need a more coherent question to frame a fitting response. This ain’t JEOPARDY!.

fireside's avatar

I’d like to think that I am higher on the continuum than I am lower.
So I guess it depends on the sample group.

answerjill's avatar

I have to at least try to be—it is part of my job requirement!

SuperMouse's avatar

Yes, I consider myself an intellectual, I also consider myself somewhat arrogant.

hearkat's avatar

No. Although I know I can get a high score on intelligence tests, I am fully aware that there are far more brilliant people than I.

MacBean's avatar

I’m smarter than the average person. And that’s sad because I’m really a bit of an idiot.

Jack79's avatar

I do. It doesn’t mean I am particularly intelligent (I am not) but I think “intellectual” to me means someone who tries to use their brain and as a result knows many things and tries to learn even more. So, by that definition, yes, I am.

wildflower's avatar

Nope. To me, an intellectual is someone who cultivates and stimulates their intellect, to the point where that is what defines them – and I certainly don’t do that, I’d rather try to apply the marbles I have to get the best/most out of things.

Nimis's avatar

I don’t think being intellectual is necessarily narcissistic.
Nor do I think it can be used to really gauge intelligence.
It just seems more like a mode of operation to me?

For me, it depends on how the situation or question engages me.
Sometimes it requires a more intellectual approach.
At other times, not so much.
