Is there a way to recover a Windows 7 login password?

I have a friend who needs to login to her newly purchased laptop with Windows 7 installed on it but the person she bought it from didn’t supply the password. I tried the Ophcrack technique but it doesn’t work for Windows 7. Does anyone know of a way to retrieve the password?

I was going to suggest Ophcrack, but then I saw your details. Sorry.

What about the Trinity Rescue Kit?

Or tracking down the person she bought it from (unless they stole it and thus don’t have the password)?

Windows 7 is not out for distribution. What this means is that the computer she bought was from a tech geek who is beta-testing Windows 7; in which case she needs to speak to the seller again to get the password. If he doesn’t know the password, it is likely she bought a computer stolen from a tech-geek.

Windows 7 will be disabled from Microsoft next year on June 10, 2010. This means that she will have to go out and buy the full version at that time, if Microsoft has it ready.

I say all this to say – just download Windows 7 and reinstall and reformat the hard drive instead of going through all that headache. It’s like trying to lockpick 3 deadbolts on a door when you could just burn the door down and put up a new one.

The download is legal, provided by Microsoft.

I was afraid of that, I already downloaded the .ISO from Microsoft, burned it to DVD-R & have my product key, thanks for the help!
