How to edit line numbers and margin for a legal pleading?

I need to change the font of the line numbers on the left margin in a legal pleading but cannot for some reason access it in Microsoft Word; any suggestions?

Try clicking on Tools > Protect Document
You may be able to modify the permissions that are set.

I figured it out (two months later)! You click “Headers and Footers” from the View menu, and click the side, and can edit them from there.
