What is the subject of the photograph under the Showtime series "Dexter"'s ending credits?

At first glance, the image appears to be a picture of bubbles of air underwater, but that has nothing to do with the theme of the show, which is, ostensibly, blood. This makes me think it’s a picture of blood spatter.
