Why would I feel nauseous when I touch the inside of my belly button?

Asked by DominicX (7542points) | asked 2 weeks ago | 15 responses | “Great Question” (0points) | Flag as…

Inspired by rooeytoo’s question about flossing and nose-itching, I was just wondering about this because ever since I was little, touching my belly button has caused me to feel slight nausea and I can’t do it for very long otherwise it feels quite unpleasant, almost like I’m going to throw up.

Does this happen to anyone else or is it just me? Could it just be a nerve in a weird place?

I never thought much about it until I shared it once on the internet a year or two ago and people acted like I was a certifiable nut…lol

No nausea for me. It just feels really weird, kind of makes me shiver like when I try to tickle my own feet but just end up recoiling. Even as I wash it in the shower I’m cringing. It is the nails-on-a-chalkboard of tactile sensations for me, touching my belly button or tickling my own feet. I guess that’s the best I can describe it.

@nxknxk

It’s the same for me; it’s like nails on a chalkboard or a fork on a plate. It makes me cringe to think about and do it. It does seem to be coupled with nausea for me, but I think mostly it’s just a general unpleasantness.

@DominicX – ahhhh I misjudged you, I am sorry. I thought touching your belly button was something you tried just because of what XOOOXIII said and you were looking for a cheap thrill.

I would say if you have had it all your life and it hasn’t killed you yet, it is probably nothing too serious. But I am not a doctor, so don’t take me too seriously.

@rooeytoo

lol…well, I did try it because if what he said (didn’t quite give me the same feeling) but I knew that it would give me the usual feeling that I had experienced for years. But I guess it’s nothing that bad.

could it be because there’s food in there?

I have no idea why anyone would want to push their bellybutton, but I don’t think it would make me nauseous. Its being close to the stomach is the only explanation I can come up with.

@Jack79 that was MY first thought, too. Why are you guys playing with your belly buttons anyway? Give it a run through in the shower & go on. this is strange

Reminds me of an old, old joke. Man says, How do I stop the pain when I hit myself in the face with a hammer? and the doctor replies, Get rid of the hammer.

“Doctor, doctor! It hurts when I do this!” lol

@DominicX I get the exact same feeling if I push on my bellybutton. It’s not something I’ve done for years and years, and wouldn’t have thought of it again if you hadn’t asked this question! Just thinking about that feeling makes me cringe a bit!

It feels very strange for me also. It almost hurts. Sends some weird shooting sensation deep inside my tummy. I don’t like it :(

Your not supposed to touch the inside of your belly button. It is probably just your body’s way of telling you to knock it off.

In retrospect I don’t know where I heard that and can’t find any evidence to back it up. Perhaps I don’t know the correct search terms.

It’s not like I do it all the time, guys. I did it once and then realized that it caused a feeling of nausea and then if I ever did it again, even years later, it caused the same feeling.

But it’s nice to know I’m not alone. I searched on Google first and I couldn’t find much information on it, so I was beginning to think it was something that only happened to me. I’m still curious as to why it happens, but @Jack79 may be right.

This still isn’t as weird as that time when where there was a spot on my upper back that when touched, caused me to feel nauseous (that was only temporary—seems like my nerves can go haywire sometimes). That was the original problem that brought up this topic on that other site a couple years ago. Either way, I’m not acting like it’s a medical problem I want a solution to, I’m just curious as to what causes the feeling, and it seems that there are several others here who have experienced similar things.

‘Cuz that’s your puke button silly.

@Blondesjon

I’m starting to think that may be the case. :)

Your navel is the end point of many nerve endings, even some that go to your stomach. so it’s possible to stimulate them by touching the navel, also on a more serious note if you feel pain when touching your navel..you might have an umbilical hernia. This is something that can be repaired early with a neoprene mesh procedure, but if left to go for too long can cause serious health issues. Suggestion: next check up, have your Doc look at it and see if it seems herniated. Peace and Be Well.
