What does a country do with a body that no one claims?

Say they take in a Jane or John Doe and no one claims or is able to identify the body. What is done with it?

I believe most cities bury them in a paupers grave yard.

I think that these days, with there being a shortage of cemetary space in most locations, it is more common for the county to cremate the body and save the ashes in case someone ever shows up to claim them.
