Export Shapefiles to Excel

Hi all…dorky computer question here. Anyone know GIS software? I’m working with ARCmap and want to mess with my data in excel. It won’t just let me copy/paste, none of its export file types open in excel…what to do? Do I need to download some conversion software? Seems like it should be easy!!

can you paste the values into a different microsft application? like word or notepad?

i know a pretty complicated =CONCATENATE formula to convert excel data into a format that is readable for other programs via notepad… So there must be a way to do the opposite.
